That is scared to death to go out to the patch and measure the pumpkins only to find out that they have stopped growing? This is my best season ever, hell it is only my second...LOL, but I am to the point now that I get nervous that the pumpkins will quit growing. My obsession is causing me to lose sleep, heck, I've picked up the tape headed for the door and started mumbling to myself, turned around at the door, threw the tape down and opened a beer, logged onto this website, just to keep from checking them.

Owen....I measured only one. That one was culled. I will start at day 20. I know they look good. That's good enough until day 20 for me.

Owen stay tuned, it was a little bit like autumn the last days with cool nights, but from this weekend summer will be back and stay, that was in the news everywhere today. 2 months to go! Much too early to quit growing now, just a short relax before the run...

It only gets worse Owen. When it gets close to weighoff time I have nightmares. Last year it even affected my neighbor from two houses down. He told me he looked out the window and thought he saw a chunk knocked out of the pumpkin. He ran over right away thinking he may catch whichever punk did it only to find it was a shadow from the tarp. When he got back he caught a lot of ribbing from his wife about getting so excited about a pumpkin.

I find myself wanting to measure once in the morning and once at night. Obviously, that's not necessary or even helpful. It does, however, indicate the obsessive level at which this hobby can become. On the bright side, it's better than a lot of others obsessions/compulsions (drugs, gambling, alcohol, etc....)

I have a good one going. Im trying hard not to measure more than every 10 days. I just come here everytime i get the urge. Which is about 5 times aday!! Im like Ben afraid i might jinx myself. Even worse find out it has quit growing!!Then i head out and get a real Dr Pepper, not a diet the real thing. That makes me feel better. This hobby will drive one to drink!!

Owen, all the time I speak about pumpkins, and I use to go (when my 4 old son and my job let me time) 3 times a day on the patch "to see what happened". So my husband told me I should move the bed to the garden... Now I try to go in the garden when he's at work. In two month, you wont' be able to sleep, to eat and to talk with your wife. When the doctor will be at your door, don't follow him to the hospital!

I have the nightmares as well. Sometimes, it's even worse. I dream that I've grown a world record, and then poof, I wake up!

Well, for me its a durned good thing that I have the measuring every day compulsion(heck...make that twice a day) LOL. I noticed my largest (65 inch) cir had not grown in the past two days. I looked everything over and found that the vine had split right fair before the pumpkin stem! I was horrified. Got my jackknife and severed the offending vine (my fault...I had let the pumpkin sit on this vine but since all was cushioned by grass, I let myself believe I did not have a problem) never occured to me that too much stress would cause the vine to split or worse the stem. Dumb!!! grrrrrr anyhow, I sprinkled the split with sulpher and wrapped it with a cloth (holding the split together and put duct tape around the whole thing.) Wonder if I did the right thing??? Or is my poor pumpkin through? Sooo maybe daily measurements are necessary to notice problems...that might be staring you right in the face but go unnoticed as long as "think" the pumpkin is growing and do not measure often.
