needs some help on what it could be and my biggest concern is what's going to happen to the pumpkin? you can see the residue around the hole.

are the holes by an indentation on the fruit by a rib?
without a proper explaination of what your seeing no one will be able to advise you.

theres a long shot that it could even be a vampire bat sucking the juice outta the fruit at night?(especially if the two holes are about an inch apart?)

a light on the pumpkin at night might help if thats the case? i bet you dont see them darn nasty vampire bats around during the day?

wiz told me they sleep under the leaf canopy and only come out after dark?

dave stelts told me he traps them, then releases them before dawn over at quinns patch.

he buys the traps from parks garden center.those ovgpg guys are full of fun.

yes there is like what you would call saw dust and to answer the first reply they are about 1 inch apart. where the wound is it is raised up and is higher than the pumpkin skin. I get a picture and post it in a little bit got to run to town

Vine borers if you see frass (sawdust). A pic would help, but if SVB, you will need to cut out. I have done it before and the pumpkin was fine. The borer was only a half inch into the pumpkin.

Spray a good contact insecticide in the holes...I had a terible year with vine borers and one got in my biggest pumpkin.. I used my sprayer and flooded the hole...the SVB Larvae died then I treated the hole with a fungicide..Now there is only a scar

I used to shoot insecticide in the hole with a syringe it also can be used (needle) to pluck them out.

The systemic works from the inside out.
The pest takes a few bites and goes on a permenant DIEt.

You want a contact killer.

as already stated might be vine borers, i have removed borers in the past from fruit with a small stiff wire with a hook bent on the end and or a small sharped stick with no ill effects to the fruit, do not go at it with a knife , just fish the borer out, disinfect the wound with a 10-1 water/bleach solution apply a fungicide like Captan and keep the wound dry until it heals a small fan will speed it up.

i did a lot off probing with small metal tool about the size of a toothpick and found nothing i posted a picture in the growers diary if you want to look at it. thanks for all the help. I did clean it &put captain on it looks like its drying up

Borers like hollow vines, and I don't think they actually bore into pumpkins to stay like they do vines. It just depends on where the eggs were laid and where the larva moved to. The biggest myth is that they move back all the way to the base of the main vine where it comes out of the ground, and foil around it will work. Not true. They enter anywhere they can and most of mine via stalks. In your case, if that was a borer, hopefully it was in and out.

yup borer, the last 3 years have dug the nasty worms out of my pumpkins, try to get the bagger out of there, needle, then repair.. good luck.....

srharrison they get as a big as a wax worm used for ice fishing about 1/2 inch long maybe 3/4s of an inch.about as big around as 1/4 inch tube when fully mature.When first in plant there smaller then a grain of rice.even smaller.
