I have 5 giant pumpkins that are very healthy and I was wondering should I bury them back into the soil after Halloween (seems a waste to throw them out back)

Any good reasons not to ?

Take the seeds out first or you will have hundreds of Pumpkin plants sprouting up in the spring. Speaking from experience here.

No you do not want to put them into the soil you will be growing pumpkins in -- reason being any disease etc. that may be present or develop on them as they decompose could remain in the soil for awhile and harm the next seasons grow if it is not given enough time to fully decompose - so best to compost them somewhere else rather than in the soil you may be using next season.

I agree with jd compost them away from the patch to reduce the chance of disease overwintering.

Yes listen to JD whatever you compost give it 2 years to break down.less your flippin it monthly to speed the process.I stopped using fresh stuff & had no disease issues this year.

Good to know. I chopped up over 1200 pounds of pumpkin in 800 square feet last year, and let it break down over winter. I'll compost the pumpkin sperate this year away from patch.

I chop mine up and spread them on the patch. The deer come in and clean them up, paying for them with fresh deer poo. I consider it a fair trade.
