Hello, this is the first time I've used the forum board. So my question is the split main vine on my main plant. Please see my diary. An 874.8 Geyelin. Do I terminate it, to let it concentrate it's energies down a secondary vine? Or pull it completely and go with the back up that is already in the ground?
If the concensus is to terminate the main vine, how do I go about this safely and not allow infection/moisture to travel/track down from the end and into the rest of the plant?

That split is lateral, with the vine. While any break in a main vine isn't wanted, this is the better of the two kinds. You can cut it off and train a secondary to be your new main, you can also leave it and still train a secondary as a just in case backup. I personally would mend that split with some splints and some zip ties, put sulfur on it, and cover it to keep water and dirt out. I would then train a secondary just behind where the split starts to run forward just in case. This is only my second year, so I hope you get lots of answers.

I would'nt worry to much about the split, just keep it dry and dont bury that part of the vine, that type of split wont effect the growth of your plant, as long as you keep it Dry! good luck,

You might make some type of table to keep rain from getting in the split. It will scar and be fine if you can keep most moisture out of there. Four 16 inch pieces of bamboo and clear plastic clipped as a lid would work nicely.
