Anyone have some helpful advice on preparing my pumpkin for transport to a local weigh-off? I am concerned about stem care once the cut is made, padding between pallet and pumpkin, and how to restrain pumpkin during transport.

Cut it off so that you have enough main and trailing vine left to put into a milk jug full of water. You pickup 5-7 pounds and be surprised how much that fruit suckZ up when cut...could be the diff... If you have a ways to travel....throw wet towelz over your fruit when traveling....but must be dried by inspection time...

I have seen pumpkins restrained in trucks with ratchet straps, padded with towels or foam rubber, wedged in with Styrofoam or hay bales. Make sure it doesn't slide forward if you have to make a quick stop. If it is real big, give yourself more braking distance. I'm lucky. We just have 1 mile of gravel road and 2 miles of asphalt and don't have to exceed more than 35mph or so, but I still make sure it won't get away from me.

If you aren't able to tie it down, fill the area with straw bales in front and behind the pallet, this will keep it in place if you have to stop quickly,,,Take it from me, on the way home from a weigh off, someone ran a stop sign in front of me, I hit the brakes and rolled it right off the pallet and it hit the front wall of the truck.
