I have two plants growing right now. One is the main plant which I really want to keep, and the other is a backup which is not growing as fast or as big, and can't handle the heat we have which will only get worse. There is one problem though. The main plant is at the point where it is producing its 5th true leaf and is beginning to lay down, but has two leaves on opposite sides of the vine that are both the same size. The vine is still a single, but there are two leaves. Only room for one plant. What would you do? Just dump water on it and wait? I don't have time to restart.

Wait and see. My 1789 Wallace plant in 2012 had the same issue (on the 4th leaf node) and thereafter it grew as a perfect and strong single main vine...it never tried to go flat or double.

Whether or not this goes double, I am stuck with this plant, so I hope it works itself out.

give it some time. Many times in the beginning they have some weird things going on but are really not an issue. If it is a double, There are several options.
After it is 4 ft long or so it may straighten itself out (this happens quite a bit).
If it doesn't, give it a few heavy waterings and maybe a dose of Nitrogen to see if you can make it have a growth spurt. Most of the time this works. but it has to be vining first.
once it is 5 or 6 ft long you can pick a normal side to become the new main and terminate the main...you lose about a week of growth (and don't terminate terts if this may be your choice)
if that doesn't work, you can snip half of the tip away (I have never been brave enough to try, but if I didn't have any other choices, and I really wanted that plant I would figure it out)
Good Luck!

My question looks a little hard to understand now that I read it again. The leaves both came out at the same time instead of alternating like they should, and they both occupy the same node. There are also two tendrils coming out right next to each other, so it is a double for sure.
The good news is the new next set of leaves seem to be alternating again, but it is still to small for me to be sure. It may just be the shortest case of ribbon vine ever. I will post back when I can see them better. Thanks.

Fixed! For good I hope. It only lasted one leaf node.

like I said, sometimes when the plant is small weird things happen and given time, the plant goes on to be perfectly normal. I've seen 3 cot leaves, double leaves, double males, males with two flowers on one stem, males conjoined with the leaf, a flower that was tall like a male but had a hard backend like half a female and female parts inside the flower.
Glad it turned out to be a normal vine. Grow it big!
