I'm new to growing pumpkins but not to gardening, been doing that all my life. The question I have is I planted some Atlantic Giants this year and they are doing great (vines) except when they get to be about the size of a softball they rot and fall off the vine or I see the rotting and I cut them off. What am I doing wrong?

I'm new to pumpkins as well, but to me it sounds like its a pollination issue, either not being pollinated or not being pollinated under ideal circumstances, which is causing it to abort.

I would guess you are facing some extremely hot weather conditions in Knoxville. It makes pollination very challenging. How are you pollinating Steven?

Are you hand pollinating?

It could be too much nitrogen. If leaves are huge and blue-green that could be the problem.
