I am growing two giants in my garden this year. One has really taken off. The other is doing well but its no where near as large as the other. I originally had planted the second as a back up. Space is a real issue in my garden. I may have to pluck the back up to have more room for my number one. My questions are.... can I move a plant without killing it? How wide spread are the roots? I don't want to damage the other plants roots doing this. My big one has about 5 feet of vine. The smaller one has about 2 feet. The two plants are about 4 feet apart.

If it were me I would just snip the smaller one at ground level.. Even at two feet long, the roots are prolly already beyond that and you don't want to disturb roots of the better plant... You could move one and it could survive but it will stall the growth for a bit..hope this helps .. Good luck

(If space wasn't an issue I would grow them out in different directions)

Yes, just clip it so not to disturb the one you want to keep... Good Luck... Alberta needs a new record... and heaven knowZ...it wont come from a greenhouse this year in Alberta... just sayin... :) In fact... If I give you an address of another Alberta grower will you go and clip thoZe plantZ for me too? Got a grower that needZ to turn his greenhouse back into something productive... Like a turkey coop... :) And save him the anguish..

I grew up in Calgary and know how insanely hard it is to grow any type of pumpkin there. Fall can come pretty quickly for you and close out your season without any protection. I don't know if you have talked with Eddy, or been to his place, but what he does in Airdire is amazing. Besides being the nicest guy in the world, he's beyond crazy when it comes to protecting plants and he does an amazing job at it.
Did you use any type of protection for your plants in the spring? Simple Kozy Koats work well, but a small hoophouse can do wonders in the spring to get the plants off to a great start. Check out my diary if you want ideas about the hoophouses. They are 8 feet square and protect the plants from the wind, snow, hail and help heat up the plants and the soil. Send me an email if you want any help with this.
I suggest cutting the smaller one off and babying the bigger one.
