Hi in all of the diaries that I see a lot of the growers I see terminate fruit close to the stem and grow them when they're out at 12 feet instead why do they do this? BTW I'm sorry about taking up a lot of forum posts

I think your asking a different question Zach. You mean 'why do growers choose to grow the pumpkin farther down the main -- 12'+ seems the norm -- rather than say 8' from the stump.

I believe it is to insure you have more vine to work with as the pumpkin grows. It will be lifting up the vine and you need a bit of space on either side of the kin to be free from the ground. Too close to the stump and you will be dealing with a very thick vine (it gets crazy big near the stump) and will likely cause stress on stem of the pumpkin as it grows.

Not to hijack the thread, but I was looking at your diary and I saw you had a pumpkin growing along the vine. My only one growing right now was growing straight up and then started to fall over across and along the vine. After shrieking in alarm, I started to slowly rotate the vine and move the pumpkin.

I'm at DAP 7? and I have it almost aligned correctly now -- moving it a little each day during the afternoon. Take it slow and you can do a lot. My vine has a bit of a twist in it now however, so I don't know if that will slow growth later on, but I'm not in for a competitor either. Just working on the mechanics this year. I did make sure I had 2.5' or so of the vine free on either side to allow for movement.

positioning of the vine according to the spatial requirements of the (hopefully extremely) growing fruit is, in many cases, done with an S-curve in the vine, you can find alot of info on the S-curve here on BP.
