Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

So, after reading through the last topic on pulling a plant, and how to do so, a question occurred to me.
I have a slow/no grower next to a great grower. I have cut back all the leaves (about a 1/4 of the slow grow plant) next to the good grower to provide some more air flow. I left the vines in, as they are pretty close to the good grower just in case.
My question is: With 3/4 of the plant still having leaves, does the vines I cut the leaves off of (they are still attached to main plant)still suck up nutrients? Or will they just die off? Consequently, as the fruit growth sucks anyway, I am thinking of cutting the whole thing off to provide lots of extra air flow to the good grower. If I cut all the leaves off the slow plant, but leave the vines in the ground, will they stay 'alive'?

If you cut off all the leaves it will die. No way to take in energy from the sun. If you cut off part of the leaves, the roots should still take up water and nutrients.
