Hello, we are going to try to grow pumpkins this year and ran across this site. In the past I have bought some of "Prizewinner" variety locally. We are not looking to grow record breakers, but would like to grow some 75+ lbs pumpkins. I have an area that is about 20'x20'. Would that be big enough for a couple of rows of prizewinners?
Thanks for any advice and help you can give!

That's about enough space for 1 prizewinner. A minimum space is about 10 x 15 feet to grow enough plant to provide for a giant pumpkin. Or 2-3 Prizewinners on one plant.

Thanks for the feedback. It's not that I don't have interest in the bigger ones, it just boils down to space for me. I wasn't sure if this forum would even tolerate a question like mine with such small fruit! :)

How about two PW plants and an AG-plant for the 150 sqft contest?

Ride1080 You could grow a very nice Atlantic Giant (over 1,000 pounds) with that kind of space. If you decided to plant prizewinner in that space I would only grow one or two plants. If you give the plants more space they will grow bigger pumpkins.

If your goal is 'Prizewinner' size fruit you might want to consider a variety called 'Growers Giant F1'. It is from Outstanding Seed Company and available through Holmes Seed Company. It has homozygous powdery mildew resistance, estimated size of 50-200 pounds, recommended spacing of 8 x 8, and would allow you to have better disease control with fewer sprays. 10 seeds go for about 6 dollars currently.

For some nice fruit(but not giants) I,d try three spaced plants and 2/3 fruit per plant. If your soil is good you should get some 125lbers.

Really appreciate the advice. This will be my first crack at growing pumpkins, so I am trying to soak up as much info as I can reading through this board, other sites, and some books. Hope I don't ask too many questions! Thanks again for the pointers!

I grew 11 prizewinners in one 5x5 hill last year in a 25x25 patch and I kept one per plant and they ranged from 60 to 150 lbs. Good soil, sunshine and lots of water.
