I'm new beginner to growing giant pumpkins. This will be my first year. I'm hungry for any and all the help I can get. My growing area is near Walhalla, North Dakota. Soil here is a bit on the sandy side. Any suggestions and information would be greatly appreciated. I purchased 4 seeds from the auction held on this site 28 Febuary. I know I have a lot to learn, but one thing about me is I don't discourage very easily. When I start something I get very very serious. Please help.

The first thing you sure do is get a soil test done to know what is in your soil. I have used Western Labs (http://www.westernlaboratories.com/soil-atlantic-giant-pumpkin.html) before and they are very helpful. The soil test costs $50, but I was told that if you send it in a check with the soil sample you can get 10% off the price.

Thanks Christopher, I'll get that done as soon as the snow is gone. Lol. Hopefully they have a quick turn around on results.

Hobbit, if the snow is not too deep maybe pull back the snow in some areas across your patch in order to take a soil sample. Make sure the sample is dry before sending it in for faster results.

Christopher24, I rent the farmhouse from the owner. He has been trying to growing, Giant Pumpkins. He's 85 yrs young. So it's been tough for him. He does have lots of seed I've been practicing germination with. He has no idea what geanolygy of seed he has. He got them from an old friend of his who has passed away. When I moved in last fall, his pumpkin patch was a wreck. He just couldn't keep up. However he did have one weigh in at 1022 lbs. we cleaned all that up worked it all up. And going to start from scratch. He told me this afternoon he sent a sample in last spring to someplace, was charged $50 he's going to find me the results. He should bring me that in the morning.
Thanks I'll keep things posted as they progress.
Kent..
