I've got limited space in a corral area. Approximately 12 x 50 with a fence along the 50' side. Real nice soil. Can I run the laterals up the fence and be beneficial? How much do laterals put back to the main vine pumpkin? I've got lots of places to grow but this is by far the best black land dirt with no amendmants needed. 2 plants..start in the middle and run opposite. T

Huge barn on North West Corner. Most storms here come from west or northwest. Biggest reason for limited space is access to the barn... Within 50'. I can always tie the vines off or weave them thru the horse fence. Looking to see if laterals are beneficial or just run them several feet and cut them off?

I guess the other thing I need to say is do I plant a 1700lb BigNOrange or a 500lb Orange. I've got a lot of nice seed.

Ideally you want the side vines to root at the leaf nodes and create a root system at every node..also, they grow so dam fast it might be more of a hassle keeping it trained into the horse fence...the one SSE storm you get will send those kites a flyin..maybe try a long flag pattern in that space??.. Only way to know for sure is to try it...as far as the seed choice??.. Dunno... Yer on yer own ....good luck!!!!!

Can some body tell me if laterals are beneficial? And how much. I'm trying straight vining in my first year for some. ..laterals short and cut off and I'm doing climbing vines for upright pumpkins. Don't know if you AIN'T TRIED. Anybody tried or have comments? I've got 40 main plants and will probably have another 50 in the patches.T

Root in soil every lateral vine aka secondary you can. If they are still small plants it doesn't hurt to grow them up a fence if that's all the room you have. That part of the plant won't be as beneficial as a rooted secondary, but they are still leaves capturing light and harnessing energy. I've done it on other pumpkin varieties and have even grown multiple pkns on boards nailed to fences hovering over the patch. These were small varieties and not AGs, but the more leaves the better. I'd tie them down every node or 2.

Thanks Smallmouth. Was going to offset the vine and bury a couple laterals at the node and run it up the fence. Wasn't sure if I should cut them or not. I've run smaller pumpkins across the tops of fences and up Sunflowers. New to the AG and was looking for help not play guessing games....MATE.

No problem, as I said, rooted vines are the best, but a few extended leaves off the fence cannot hurt by producing more sugar for the plant.

Way back I ran my vines up the side wall at home....vines grew 10-12 feet with out problems/ and extra 150 sf. But they had no roots.. I felt and was told at the time, they would pull more from the plant than produce without those roots... Its all about the roots in the sport....

On my diary page is last years 150 lb prizewinner. It was grown basically with no roots except for the main vine for about 5'. I ran all vines from 10 plants over mill fabric so I didn't have to weed. 80 to 150 lbers. All laterals and most of the mains couldn't get to dirt. Still turned out nice. That is why I was looking for info. T

I can't help myself... why is there a New Growers Forum on this site? I'm guessing so people can ask questions and learn!!!! I've grown for 30 plus years, just not AG's. I'm recently retired from my Stamped Concrete Business. Gardening is fun and I was looking for some help. I should have gone to General Discussion and read between the lines. If you can't contribute with a reasonable response you shouldn't contribute at all. I feel real sorry for the April Fools Gone Wrong. Get A Grip!!!! TTTT

Honestly I wouldn't run vines up the fence more than 2ft(pull more water than their worth), I'd try growing at an angle and root the sides in and set pumpkin at 13-15ft. with 600sqft I'd only grow 1 plant.

I like the 2' fence idea. Sun exposure. Inclined to what I believed. Why put water to someplace it doesn't need to go. Cut it and all water should go someplace beneficial. See ya'll at the weigh offs. T

Do a side by side with the same seed. One plant gets long fence 2ndaries and one gets short 2ndaries. Never grown on a fence before.

That was a thought..but there are different genetics from one seed to another..have to plant at least ten for a comparison.

I've got 20,000 sq ft tilled and almost ready to go. I don't have ten of the same seed however. As a first year grower I have quite a variety but a limited number of the same seed. I've got ten in the ground and 25 waiting to go in and some 300-400 lbers that will go in near the end of May weather permitting
