My pumpkin area is way back on my 50+ acre property - meaning that I do not have access to easy water. Its all water cans for me. How much water and how often would you all suggest? Do you water only the main root or would you also water everything? Would the plant want to get watered 2-3 times a week? Assume a 2 gallon watering can - how much would I use per plant?

Last year I ruined them by watering too often. Trying to figure out what they need to grow without over doing it this year...

gatzow - I would start a diary - it is hard for other growers to answer all of your questions without seeing your plants. I can tell you, you need to water all of your plant, including several feet behind the stump. You are definitely going to need a lot of water if you are trying to grow a large AG. How much water right now will depend on the size of your plant, your soil type, temperature, etc - I am watering 75 gallons a day on three plants, so 225 gallons a day if we don't get rain - ill let you do the math on 2 gallon watering cans :) but i know i wouldn't have the time for that - i pump my sump pump water into a large holding tank and use that to water my plants - good luck

Oh wow... That's a lot of water... I think I will have to setup my 2 inch water pump and start taking water out of the ponds... I might use up some fuel, but I think that will be a lot easier...

Curt is right Gatzow, there are a lot of great growers in your area. I would reach out to them for advice on how best to set up for your patch and answer your questions. I am newbie as well. Just sharing what I have been told :)

I have been in contact with a local grower. He showed me his operation and gave me some fertilizer to use among other knowledge. Just thought I would post here. I thought I had read that some people water 2-3 times a week and then I read here that some are watering every day... Just trying to figure out the best approach to keep my plants healthy. I am not expecting a thousand pounder - but Id like to just keep the plant happy and healthy for this year....

I converted old trash containers with valves and attached hoses left behind by other year's gardeners. I rent my community plots and do not have direct water access, so I haul sometimes about 130 gallons a day by carts. The hoses are modified with holes I created and the hoses are woven throughout and around the plant. I do also hand water as much as time permits in the morning or evening and also follow a feeding schedule. I am really new as a grower, but I am reading books and reading diaries by seasoned growers. This is really fun! Have a great growing season.

Fixed my water problem I think. It took almost 1000 feet of hose, but ran water from my house, down the big hill all the way to the pumpkin area. Has enough pressure to run a sprinkler!!
