im not 100% shure, but i think "greenies" are giant pumpkins pollinated with squash.

Technically they're all Squash. But 80% (corrections?) orange is a Pumpkin. 21%+ green is a squash.

Personally I say all green is a squash, but this statement will start a firestorm of debate.

This will be an active post!

If it ain't 100% green as grass, it's not a true greenie.

true greenies have a green fruit on the female blossom. People call some giants squash at one site and pumpkins at other ones just to make the issue even more fun! If Craig Weir's giant 'pumpkin', the 1260.4, was weighed in Ohio it would've been a 'squash' most likely. In fact many Topsfield 'pumpkins' are Ohio 'squash'. well I agree with the topsfield decisions since these fruit aren't true squash, just half green pumpkins.

When I first saw pics of Craig's pumpkin on this site I to thought it was a "tweener", but when Craig sent me some seed that year ( thanks again Craig) He also sent me a pic that was taken in better light & I then saw that the 1260 was ALL pumpkin. Nice & orange.
Sometimes we can't believe what we see in pics.........Paul

I thought the squash competition last year defined the true Greenie...had to start as a green Pea....be full green at day thirty...and remain 100% green to the end....???

A "greenie" is a slang word for a squash...usually an affectionate term referring to a 100% or real close to 100% green/grey/or blueish fruit.
Botanically speaking, these Atlantic Giants are all squash.
The largest organized Giant Pumpkin organization has a rule that states (paraphrase)"to be eligible for the heaviest pumpkin, and to qualify for GPC prize money, the pumpkin must be 75% to 100% pumpkin color. All others will be considered squash. Pumpkin colors will include orange, red, yellow, tan, cream, white and/or combinations of these colors. Squash colors will include green, grey, blue and /or combinations of these colors. All surface areas visible when the pumpkin is resting in the position it was grown in must be considered. The color of the not-visible area underneath the pumpkin will not be considered.
Not all wieghoffs follow GPC rules...not even all GPC wieghoffs follow GPC rules for the wieghoff prizes. Fruits that appear to be big enough to challenge for GPC prizemonies are usually re-classified. Check with your individual wieghoff to see what they will be calling a greenie on wieghoff day.

Dave there is no guarantees in this hobby. I had a pumpkin that was an 846 Calai x 805 Pukos turn almost solid ugly green on me. Should have been orange. It was 18% heavy though. Shannon

Thats not likely to happen UJ...People want to see Big Orange Pumpkins. The Green movement is happening. I think there will be alot more exposure for the big green ones. But Orange going away never. The Great Pumpkin will come on Halloween night to the growers who are the most "Sincere". I dont see room on that night for the Great Squash too...:)

You sit in your orange pumpkin patch every year and we're forced to watch you strike out waiting for the Great Pumpkin who never comes....perhaps if you HAD a squash in the patch he would come?....obviously what your doing now aint working Linus...move on over to the green side buddy, at least get some variety in your life !!

My pumpkins are starting out green, then as they grow, they're becoming verigated with the look of a watermelon. The leaves all look normal.I also have yellow ones on another plant the size of a basketball and they look fine.Is this possibly watermelon mosaic virus?I've taken a sample of pumpkin and leaf to the Dept of Agriculture but haven't heard back yet.
