I don't really know a lot about it but the benefit is it helps the growth with it's sugars of benneficial fungi. It is a tad hard to find though. I'm not sure about the sq. footage. When docgipe posts a reply go with his advice.

Molasses is a food source for the beneficial bacteria that live in the rizosphere (near the roots) of the plant.

Naturally, root exudates provide an environment for the good bacteria that live in the soil.

Giving molasses is a shortcut that should help the efficiency of the plant.

The feed mills have cattle grade black strap molasses. The price is relative to less processing than human food grade.
Anything sweet will work including tossed away sugar filled doughnuts, left over candied sweet potatoe syrup and melted icecream. Molasses happens to be the cheapest and the best.

Two to three dollars a gallon seems to be the price range we have heard here when we discuss costs. Two ounces a week is fair treatment along with fish oils and kelp as foliar sprays. I used about two gallons on a 1000 square foot patch begining to end last year.

At the reccommendation of Craig Lembke, AGRO-K Representative I used in in conjunction with their well developed foliar program for growing giant pumpkins. I am most pleased with the AGRO-K program and other suggestions Craig has extended to me.
