I have a female starting at about 5ft on the main vine, should I take it off ? It seems like most growers try to get the female at 10-12 feet out on the main vine.

Yes, take it off, 5 feet is too close and not enough secondaries behind to allow a big enough plant to push the fruit. There will be more further out.

I second that. Youve got time ro get a much bigger plant and still get one pollinated in late june. Depends on your goals and square footage for plant.World records have been grown 9 feet out.If your trying to compete 12ft.+ out is considered ideal.

Appreciate the response. Not sure why both of the pumpkins I planted started a female 5 ft on the main vines. First year grower so I value your input.

great advice but as a side note, as a new grower, ya might wanna leave it just to observe it....see how it develops/how many days it takes to open/see what it looks like inside...then pluck it....ya know ?....a little practice for when you get one in target range?....exciting...I remember my first...good luck
