Do you wait until you decide which pumpkin your going to keep before doing any sand or boards?

I'm looking for under the pumpkin board information - versus walking boards.

I did. Basicallly its going to be much harder to get anything under the pumpkin past 10-15 DAP. For me since mine start slow 15 DAP works. If you wait until bowling ball size thats getting risky seems like thats when they can kink the vine. Beyond that size they are much harder to deal with. The top growers often seem to have theirs ready around 3 DAP

I don’t wait too long, typically as they lay down. You don’t want to be trying to pick up a pkn to get something underneath and have the stem snap. Been there and done that on day 11 and it sucks.
This is just the way I do it

Thank you all for your quick responses. I better get them going then. I just picked up the supplies this week. I got Home Depot to cut the boards down to 4x4 for me. Got 6 bags of fine play sand . I am going to try 2 types of bottom boards. 1.) 3/4 inch plywood, and 2) Insulation board - 2 inch - with sand on top both and see which method works best.

Lol, PG, that is almost what I did this year. My HD sells pre-cut sanded exterior 3/4 in. 2ft. x 2ft. and I added sand. Then I decided to try the pre-cut 2ft x 2ft pink insulation board also had HD for my other pumpkin.
Since I am down to just one pumpkin which is on the pink insulation board, I will be interested to see how the board holds up.

Just went to lumber yard and purchased 4x4 ft, I guess I must be optimistic, 3/4 treated plywood. I am going to staple some of that landscape fabric that lets water go through onto it, then leveling sand on top. Leveling sand is much finer than play sand. My girl is 6 DAP tomorrow and I'm going to get it under her tomorrow.
