I wonder if some generous growers could check the last post in my grower diary and offer an assessment of my main vine? I had a wind storm earlier in the season that snapped some stalks along the main, and on a closer inspection today I noticed a brown, dampish looking area about 6-7 feet down. Not sure if this is normal gunk and funk, or off I need to be treating it or cutting on it? My instinct is get the dirt off and get some sunlight to start? I also see people mention adding sulfur powder to plant wounds, is that a thing? Or am I going to need to start cutting on it?

I've had great results with daconil. I'm not sure if sulfer is a cure or preventative or both. Using a brush to rub the daconil in might be sufficient. As long as it's in direct contact with the infection it seems to work well enough that invasive surgery might not be necessary. That's been my experience

I found a spot on one of my mains yesterday like that. I painted it with straight daconil. I also opened up the plant so the sun can hit it. It may not need surgery... if you caught it early enough. If it seems to be growing and getting worse I would consider removing all the brown rotten tissue. Worse case scenario is complete amputation. I would only consider that if i saw wilting leaves and it was spreading, or the rot went completely through the vine and there was no healthy tissue left.

It looks like a surface issue. Clean up the weeds and open the area to sun and wind to dry it out. If it is soft scape it off to healthy tissue. Lightly coat with sulfur, daconil or captan and put a fan on it to dry it down. Put a cover on it to keep it dry. If it is to far gone you still can get a good pumpkin if the plan is fully buried and the secondary vines will feed the pumpkin.

Thanks for the input! I've got daconil ready to go this afternoon! I'll try and clean it up and keep it dry, hoping I don't need to cut on it!

I am up 44 from you. With the copious amounts of rain we've been getting, I'd aerate around and under the vine and leave dirt exclusively at the nodes. I have had browning like that when it is too wet and won't dry. One thing I have learned over the last 12 years from clubs and various growers is under canopy air flow is key. Lots of people who can get away with dirt all over the vine don't have the humidity and heat we do. Factor in the foot of rain over the last couple weeks and look out for disease. Weeds also aren't good for air flow, but we all have to deal with them.

Thanks! And yeah, the weather this year has been wild, the weeds always seem to get away from me sooner than they should. With all this rain, I've got my work cut out for me!
