I successfully geminated a werner 1004 (03)and moved it into a pot. It has come up very vigorously and is doing well except for one thing. It is a double vine. It has two leaves where all my other plants have one. I think this is a double vine. My questions are 1)Why is this bad? 2) Is there anything I can do about it?

Double vines are a mutation. Some growers seem to prune them down to one vine with success, other plants just never correct themselves and keep double vining. I had a double vine mutant last year, I ended up taking it out. My opinion, they are a major pain in the butt most of the time. Normal vines grow normal pumpkins, mutations can pop surprises. If you want to try to keep your plant, I advise finding someone with experience growing a double viner and find as much info as you can from them on how to do things best. Best wishes, Jim

Last year, my Emmons 922 sent out a double vine by the third week. I cut it back and trimmed off all the "squirrelly" looking leaves. It corrected itself and became a huge main vine(3" diameter).....only to have the pumpkin split the second week in August. :>(

Thanks for the info folks. I think I'll put it in my patch tom play with until it encroaches on another plant. I might learn something.
