The first leaf on one of my seedlings has a curled first leaf. It seems to be stuck together on the end and won't open correctly. The second and third leaves are now visable and are following the same pattern. They are slightly brown on the tips and don't seem to be opening properly. Hase anyone experianced this before? Will it grow out of this or is it scrap?

If you have other plants that look normal and have cared for them identically you probably can rule out sunlight, moisture or temperature.

I would start loooking into genetics and see if this is a common mutation found in the ma or pa of your seed.

I'd be willing to bet you still have them under flourscent lights? Not sure why but I suspect it is the lights rather then any problems with temp, seed or soil. Get them outside and the new leaves do fine. I've had this problem in the past. This year I put them outside as soon as the cotyledons opened up. No problems this year.

i had that last year on my 1007 brown for the first 4 leaves
and the leaves cupped too and stayed cupped, but the rest
grew out fine and the plant grew my personal best
of 487.5. it did take a little longer to vine than
the others but that kicked in fine too.

I checked with the guy that started the plant. He did use some fertilizer very early on. I have come to the conclusion that it is fertilizer burn. A second seedling I have started as a back up plant is showing the same symptoms. I am using Miricle Grow soil less planting medium to start them in. It is "enriched" and I am begining to think it is too hot for these seedlings. My first plantings, I used a regular soilless mix with no problems.

I have a picture in my photo gallery of a seedling w/ curled leaves.

This was caused by an application of sulfur due to some mold that was on the cots.
This was a back up seed from my second year of growing.
Way too much sulfur was added. No more fungus, but it really stunted the seedling.

Luckily the plant will grow out of it. I think this is the plant's response to toxic conditions. - fert, fungicide etc.

I've gotten plenty of those in the past, this year too.
This years plants had nothing but the soil they grew in so fert, fungicide, pesticide, etc. didn't cause it. Light didn't cause it because they emerged from the soil that way.
Sometimes they just come up like that but in the scheme of things it really means absolutely nothing. The first true leaves are just the ignition switch, and then they're gone.
Don't sweat it, young AG plants do lots of things folks worry about for nothing sometimes.

oops....I meant that some leaves emerge that way with or without light. No rhyme or reason so therefore not valid as a cause....my 2 cents.

Have you ever cut the seed leaves and the first 2 or 3 true leaves from your plants after planting? I lost them by accident when the plants crashed down in my greenhouse, now they look great and I filled up the gaps with soil, since then additional roots emerge from the "extended stumps".
Just an idea because my grandpa always teached me to cut off the lower leaves from tomatoe plants not to touch the soil.
