Four the past 4 years I have come to Big Pumpkins to help me grow my pumpkins. I have always grown smaller pumpkins: Connecticut, Big Max....ect. I have never really had an interest in growing the big ones. While at a supply store recently I saw a package of Dill's Atlantic and just had an urge to buy them. I have learned a great deal from this site on soil, treating pests and disease's. I often see the various pumpkin name's and numbers but I don't really recall seeing anything about Dill's?. I was just wondering what kind of pumpkin can I expect. The seed package doesn't even seem to give the weight range ( I have gone to the Dill site also.) My wife laughs at me and tells me "It will probably never grow anyway." They are beautiful looking plants so far. I planted 8 smaller size and 4 of the Atlantic. Everything has come up except 1 of the Atlantic's. For seeds that were simply soaked and then planted right in the mounds all my pumpkins look really healthy. I will end up with just one Atlantic but was just wondering about them. I also have one more question that I will ask on a new post. Thanks....

Blaine, for arguments sake, all of the seeds that we use to grow our competition sized pumpkins are Dills Atlantic Giants. The only difference between you're store bought seed, and our seeds is that you dont know the lineage of them, and most of us do. The seeds you purchased could be from a pumpkin of any weight, any color, and any cross. Most of us do an intense study of a pumpkin's lineage and then make a decision on what to plant, taking all factors that are important to us, into consideration, ie; shape, color, heavy the charts, etc.
Once you've seen what the store bought seeds can do, im confident that come this fall you'll be looking for some proven performers based on your likes/dislikes. Have fun, but be warned, this is VERY addicting! :)

Thanks once again Scott... and I'm not thrilled about the addicting part. I deal with enough grief every year growing my other pumpkins with out taking on something like this. I see the care that everyone puts into there pumpkins. I am hoping that since I'm not trying to grow any prize winners that maybe the Atlantic won't have any "bigger" place in my heart than the rest of my pumpkins. That's what I'm hoping anyway... but I don't know.... Thanks again for taking the time to help me.. Blaine
