I have 3 plants going all around 6-7 feet.. 1 has 5 female flowers the other 2 have none, so I asume some plants may take a little longer. Be patient they will come!! Good luck

Little yellow grape shaped things just under the flower are females. The rest aren't. No sex change operations. Females normally form up to 10+ feet out. That's the goal anyway. 8 week old plants showing females between 10-12 feet are good.

A little shot of a higher Phosphorus fert will also incourage the ladies to show up.
15-30-15 or better 10-52-10 I think there is also a fish based bloom buster out there on the market but it is a 0-10-10.
Might be limited choices there in the Azores..... Good Luck

I also have some of these flowers. Should they be picked off or just left alone?

They should be left alone. These are the male flowers that will hopefully pollinate the female flowers.

The males show up to the party early. This encourages the bees to find your plants so when the females show up there will be pollenators. The female is receptive only for a short time. You will quickly learn how to tell the day before a female is going to open the next morning. Then for the first few hours after opening she will be receptive to pollenation. Watch your males as they develop and finally open for the first time. The females look the same except for the pumpkin at thier base. Eric
