first time grower, pumpkin a little bigger than a basketball but unfortunately is on about a 45 degree angle from the vine and looks like it will soon be pushing on one side of the vine. i know it's late but is there anything i can do to keep it from pushing itself off the vine?

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I put a 90 degree bend in the vine when I pollinate a pumpkin. Kind of messes up the geometry of the plant but it helps a lot once the pumpkin starts to grow. Start moving the pumpkin a little every afternoon (when it warm and the plant is flexible) and get it to 90 degrees. Also pick the pumpkin up and "pull" it away from the vine. As the pumpkin grows it pushes the whole stem end of the pumpkin towards the vine. This causes even additional stress. The secret is make these changes slowly, but in about a week if your pumpkin is growing well you won't be able to move it so do it now.

Besides scooting the fruit away from the vine, I have found that by slowly sliding pieces of styrafoam between fruit and vine, you can gain some slack. Do this gradually, over period of a few days, and don't put too muck stress on that stem!

Nope, My pumpkin is only about the size of a softball and also I'm not sure that my wife really cares.
