Subject: removing leaves

i have some leaves that are badly damaged by powdery mildew. i have removed some, but am unsure to cut them off at the base where they meet the stem or more tword the end. also is this a good practice of removing the badly infected leaves if there arent many.

I cut them off by the vine and dispose them away from the patch to prevent the spores from spreading. Then spray the plant with fungicide.
