Someone is interested in showing my pumpkin indoors in October. I have heard that a large pumpkin will last a good month outdoors but only 1 week max indoors. Is this correct ? Is there a way to preserve a pumpkin so it can be shown indoors for a longer time - like a spray coating of urethene etc... or are you forced to carve out the interior which seems like it may be even more of a mess ? Thanks.

The indoor place should be dry and cool, no direct sunlight. Spray some soft bleach solution on the pumpkin before. If the fruit is healthy and solid when harvested, it should be okay for many weeks.

If not carved immediately after the weighoffs for Halloween and if the pumpkin fits though the door I have successfully stored giant pumpkins indoors (dry, about 20°C) until late February.
The pumpkins were still in excellent condition when cut them open and we even used the flesh for cooking, baking, etc. Seeds have not sprouted inside the pumpkins also. I guess the fruits could have been kept for another one to two months easily...

The seeds might germinate inside the pumpkin if kept inside. If the seeds are of value this can be a problem.
