My kinds and I grew our first giant pumpkin this year! (well ok...it did not get too giant). Anyway.... they loved opening it up and getting out the seeds to try again next year...what a fun lesson...

Anyway...when we opened it up several of the seeds had already started to grow. There were about 20 8" long plants in there. I have taken out the rest of the seeds, rinsed them off and set them out to try.

Does this mean anything for the rest of the seeds? Should I be concerned the rest are not going to germinate next year because they have already 'started'??

You'll just have to wait until the seeds dry for awhile
and the water comes out of them. They are probably very bloated and I'll bet you cut the pumpkin from the plant a few weeks before you opened her up.
Once the seeds are dry you just have to squeeze each one gently and see if they are hollow or hard. If they are hard and not cracked too badly then they will most likely be fine.

My 7 year old is an experienced pumpkin seed squeezer and knows a good one from a bad one as well as I do!

Also, you shouldn't set them out to "try"...they're only babies and it's cold outside! LOL!

I think the seeds that haven't germinated should be fine so long as the seed shell hasn't split open. Be sure to put those seeds somewhere with air circulation. If your pumpkin was open pollinated you might consider getting different seeds.
