Excerpt from the HUNT for an Orange October.
GVGO Newsletter Dec 2009. 1678 Hunt...

Except for being a club founding father, past president and Hall of Fame member Phil Hunt had struggled over a number of seasons of pumpkin misfortune. A seasoned outdoors man Phil had often been foiled by the big ones that got away. Jane Hunt our treasurer and Chief Financial Officer had led the patch charge in recent years. Colouring it in a stunning rainbow with her very vibrant spray wand. She held it very appropriately and firmly in place as an accountant at Crayola, Canada. A champion watermelon grower and former Canadian record holder Jane has assumed the laborious patch chores of their astonishing husband and wife duo in spectacular fashion.

It happened very suddenly on the shores of a cold churning Lake Huron. The Hunt for an Orange October had ended with a resounding thud as the brute pounced upon the unsuspecting scale. Phil and Jane had done it!!!! Broadcasting aside the competition in a raptor like swoop they emerged as champions of Canada with a 901 Hunt pumpkin tilting the scales at a miraculous 1678 pounds and shocking the onlookers with a fruit that surged beyond belief at more than 19% over the charts.

Such a popular win it was. The crowd was whipped into a roaring frenzy as growers huddled the new champs and bounced to the beat of the new stars of Port Elgin. The KING and QUEEN had just claimed their kingdom. In a dazzling dance the HUNT had been completed and this big one never got away.

Wow Russ that's great. Thanks.

Just so everyone knows, there was a low # of seeds in the 1677.5 pumpkin. Most are being donated to our home club, the GVGO, but a few will be available through these seed auctions. That only leaves us with less than 20 seeds left for ourselves. These will be kept &/or given to some of our friends who will grow them. Don't miss out on getting a chance to get a 1677.5. They will be in high demand.

Russ, we crossed the 1156 Hunt (1631 x 1689)into the 901 that we grew this year. If you look at the genetic backgound, it has 1600# written all over it. Hopefully a few good growers will give it a honest try. We think that this could be our best cross. Take care.

The winning bidder last night in the CTGS&PGA Auction paid 180.00 for a 1678 Hunt. The 1725 went for 205 on Saturday night. That's 385 for just two of the 6 seeds in this lot. Now add in the values of the other 4 seeds and its shocking what this lot will be worth some day.

Eddie at $275.00 is literally walking away with this one folks.

One official note on the 1678 Hunt. The AGGC has it listed as a 1677.5 which it is not. This is incorrect. It is officially weighed in as the 1678 Hunt 09 in the GPC stats page.
