A situation has come up that I would like the GPC to consider and post their official view on.

Up until today I have always used 1 Kg to be equal to 2.204 lbs. I was informed by a few growers that in fact the equation should be:

1 kilogram = 2.20462262 pounds

I posted a question on another website asking for input on how I should handle the conversion and received at least 4-5 different ideas.

How would the GPC like for those sites that weigh using kilograms to convert the weight to pounds?

I know everyone is busy right now, so I don't expect an answer tomorrow, however in case I miss the post with the official decision, please send me an email:

Thank you for your consideration of this request.

My .00002 cents worth...

When I convert metric (g/kg) to pounds... I write the entire pumpkin weight in g, then divide by 453.6 (number of grams per pound).

If it was a 371kg pumpkin, I would write 371000 (grams)
then divide... Getting 817.901... so 817.9# ...

It does need an official ruling :)

So....whats the scale tolerance? 1-2% ? And what does GPC measure to- 1/2 lb? tenth of a lb? Why would you expect to take the conversion out past 10 significant figures if the scale weight is to a tenth?.......

When measurements are multiplied or divided, the answer can contain no more significant figures than the least accurate measurement. Answer must be rounded to the same number of significant figures as the operand with the fewest number of significant figures, i.e. the least certain.

Owen we will definitely discuss the best way to handle the conversion when figuring out manually.

Ken has the conversion programed in the BP spread sheet and I will check with him to see how he figures it out.

Excellent question,

Dave

Have had same problem here every year too, this year I used 2.20462262 when conversin weighs...

When ever you decide how to converse, please post it in General discussion too, thanks.
