I thought i would ask why the 703 smith is a squash. It's a (935 Lloyd X self)X self. I thought that the 935 was a pale pumpkin so, why is the 703 smith a squash.

hey you

because it was green... and that was most likely caused by all the self pollination, it brought out the recessive trait.

What were the squashes in the 703's backround

The 703 was the first & only reported fruit grown from the 547.0 Kournikakas 2000 which is 935 Lloyd x self.

Now the 1092 Burke '98 is also 935 x self. It was a record, so it was widely planted but none of it's progeny were squash. It did grow the widely planted 805 Pukos which also has never thrown all green. But the 805 has grown fruit with quite a bit of green.

Strangely, there are no records at AGGC of anything grown from the 703, so there is no saying that all of its prgeny would stay green either.

Every 703 I've followed has produced green offspring....usually of small size and unsatisfying result. I does show promise as a father however. I would never grow it looking for a squash contest winner, but for genetics its the only WIDELY available 935 x self squash out there.

Going back on the female side 935 Lloyd from 875 Lloyd From 687 Lloyd from 614 Neily from 752.5 Stellpflug from 589 Nesbitt* from 574 Mitchel* from 671 Gancarz from 390 Gancarz.
The 614 Neily was a 752.5 Stellpflug crossed with the 509 Neily* that was on the female side.... from 480.5 Neily* from 426 Neily* from 355.5 Dill*.
Maybe the question should be why are there so few green ones popping up from the Lloyd genes? Perhaps it was a trait that was bred out by selfing the 687. It is interesting that almost every fruit grown in the last few years traces their genes back to only three fruit 355.5Dill*, 390 Gancarz and the 579 Nesbitt! Thats why I don't think a large degree of hybred vigour is possible using modern genes. We have already selected desirable genetic traits and crossed them back several times and that is how our modern seeds are getting better. Now I would love to hear some opinions.lol Don

Do you think the 730 smith would still posses the...how do I put it? The power off the 935 in its genetics even though it through squash? I figure if its throughing squash then it might not have the desirable traits I want when I cross it with something else. I want good quality 935 Lloyd genetics. Insane or sane question?

It may be a good way of creating an awsome squash seed! You have a good foundation to build a consistant, very large producing, pure green squash seed.

Just what I think,

I grew the 703 and had radiant green results, but my skill as a grower wasn't good enough to keep it going, and it died around 100#. I honestly feel that the plant would have done marvelous in the patch of a more experienced grower.
