Why did the 723 Bobier 99 become the icon seed and the
700+ Bobier 99 remain the sleeper seed? Genetically speaking they are nearly the same cross.

Joe Pukos and Mitchell from Michigan grew 1000+ # the first year out which motivated many growers to grow it the next year. The more a seed gets planted the more it gets proved. There is about 100 listings of the 723 on AGGC. Pure math will tell you that there are going to be some bigs ones. It should also be noted there are some very sucessful growers that grew some duds from the 723. I am knocking the 723 but I stick to the common sense theory "the more a seed gets planted the more it gets proven".

Also, the 723 may have been the only same cross as 1999 world record, the 1131 Checkon, which had no viable seeds

Ron, Are you talking about Bill's 729? I think that's the only other 700+ pounder that Bill B. grew that year.

I'm not sure Joe. The seed I grew was the 588 Beachy 00(700+ Bobier x 1061 Zehr) Tom B. said the cross on the Bobier seed was 935 Lloyd x 1056 Stellpflug

hmmm.. the 1056 is a selfed 946, whereas the 865 Mettler is 946 x 567.5, maybe more people liked the 567 genes

Bill's 729 from 1999 was a 942.5 Cox x 935 Lloyd. I never knew the 1999 700+ sleeper seed ever existed, Bill never sent me one. Perhaps it was a seed only available through Ray Waterman and his P and P seeds? He has some 700+ Bobier seeds listed now that were from Bill's patch of 2000.

I thought the 1056.5 Stellpflug 98 was (946.5 Geerts 96 x 916 LaRue 97) I originally got that info from this link

I think the 700+ that I grew was 935 x 1056 stellpflug. Got that info from Bill in a phone conversation several years ago. Knowing what I know now, I think it could produce 1000+ easy.

having problems with pot on spring break!

I got the 1056.5 Stellpflug directly from Len. It is definitely a 946.5 Geerts X 916 LaRue.
