There were some very nice new crosses made in 2003. Now we have the task of picking the ones with the most promise.

Which of these hold promise?

905 Ailts (898 Knauss x 1260 Weir) Wow
1124.8 Goetz (1370 Rose x 1260 Weir)
897.5 Davies (845 Bobier x 1260 Weir)
919 & 1048 Wallace (1068 Wallace x 500 Wallace & reverse)
520 Toftness (709.5 McCallum x 982 Myers)
281 Jepsen (845 Bobier x 842 Eaton) Shameless plug

Some of the color crosses this year are to die for:

1026 Jutras (1225 Jutras x 1016 Daletas)
933 Jutras (846 Jutras x 1016 Daletas)
827 Garrell (801.5 Stelts x 876.5 Lloyd) same as 846 Calai
1125 Frantz (869 Calai x 1225 Jutras)
269 Reiss (810 Dill x 1016 Daletas)

And some of the selfed seeds:

891 Tanner (735 Pukos x self)
495 Reiss (801.5 Stelts x self)

How is any self respecting grower going to decide with seeds like these to choose from?

Yes, I'd been thinking about the 898x1260 and hadn't seen yet whether anyone had done it.

I will be going with the 1170.6 Hopkins 2004 (679.5 X 1260)
the cross on the 679 is 360 hopkins x 712 kuhn.I think it will do good and might throw heavy.

Hey Steve,

Thanks for mentioning my

891 Tanner 04 (735 Pukos x self) seed.

and thanks to Joe for sending me a couple 735's a few years back. I think it is a great seed but then of course I'm biased. A lot of growers have requested seeds from me for this cross. and ...
Quite a few people have told me that it is on there short list of seeds to plant this year.
I'm just happy to be able to share after a my seeds with others after years not being able to.

The 891 had 628 seeds... I have given out A LOT of them but there are I still some left if anyone is interested.

Love that 1125 Frantz, love to have the Jutras 1225, Keep in mind the Peters 1033' and Beachy's 801.5 offspring 23?..as far as I can tell they all have Laemelle in their parentage...a lovely NJ seed!

i think the 575 Gerry (950.4 Boyton X 767 Catapano)
should do really well. (845 X 845) X (723 X 846)

th th that's what i think.

That 575 keeps drawing my eye too Eric. It should be a heat resistant bugger & that could be important if we ever have a warm summer again.

The Hoomis 705 looks interesting to me. 900 Lyons x 552 Sherwood, while the 705 was a orange one off the 900 you never know what the next generation holds & with the 552 crossed into it......well you never know.....

Was there anything remarkable grown on the 1260 Weir apart from the 1370 Rose? Sounds more like good pollinator from the crosses mentioned here.

I believe the greatest lure of the 1260 is the human desire to want most that which we're least likely to get. Once the rabbit's caught, the dog stops running.

Thanks Owen. The line up of the 1260 crosses in 2004 is outstanding.

According to Joel, the 911 Holland was only about 40 days old when it split and was on its way to 1500/+

1260 as a mother has already been proven for sure with a 1124 and 1011 been grown off of the 1370 Rose (1260x712) and a 900+ off the 855 Black (1260x735).

1260 as a father is proven, though not as much with a 936, and a 886 off the 723 Castellucci (I believe 441 Castellucci x 1260).

I do believe that some of the crosses this year using the 1260 as the father will get more publickty, hence grown more, and therefore produce more big progeny.

1124.8 Goetze 04 (1370 Rose X 1260 Weir)
1011.4 Peters 04 (1370 Rose X Self)
1129.5 Hester 04 (1260 weir x 582 Hester)
1124 Hester 04 (723 Bobier x 1260 Weir)
1144 Hester 04 (846 Calai X 1260 Weir)
905 Ailts 04 (898 Knauss x 1260 Weir)
1194 Holland 04 (723 Bobier x 1260 Weir)
995 Holland 04 (1134 Holland x 1260 Weir)

Wow :)

floh,
Your examples don't prove anything about the 1260 Weir as a father. The pollinator will not affect the pumpkin in any way, except the seed genetics(someone please correct me if I'm wrong). The pumpkins grown from the 1170.6, 1124.8,etc. seed, is where you will see the influence of the 1260 Weir as a father. I hope you don't mind me correcting you on this, as it seems you were making an incorrect assumption.

Doug, The thread is aimed at 2004 seeds. We strayed toward 1260 genetics. This is all speculative for now until some of these are planted.

Steve,
Thanks for the reminder.
Sorry floh, if I thought you were assuming something you weren't.

Two interesting crosses I've thought about, in addition to some of those mentioned, are:
1370 Rose X 801.5 Stelts(a Speakman cross, I think)
1370 Rose X 846 Calai(a Liggett cross, I think)

Im looking VERY hard at the 905 Ailts. I will bet it gets widely planted in 05'. If I could talk Joe into planting one of mine I would put it in for sure.

919 Wallace '04 (1068 Wallace '03 x 500 Wallace '03)
1048 Wallace '04 (500 Wallace '03 x 1068 Wallace '03)

Ought to be able to have fun selfing these 2 beauties for future genetics.

1068 Wallace '03 = 845 Bobier '00 OUW x 898 Knauss '01
500 Wallace '03 = 898 Knauss '01 x 845 Bobier '00 UOW
