I have the chance to make some very nice crosses this year, But I was wondering if I should chose to make all the crosses I want and have smaller fruit, or to make just one or two of them and possibly have larger fruit. What would you guys do?
I will be growing the 1097 Beachy, 490 Beachy, 488 Beachy, 1005 Mombert, 1038 Emmons, and the 1432 Carlson.
Also what would be the crosses you would make with those seeds?
Thanks for the help, Mikkal

Until they start awarding prizes for the nicest cross, I'd suggest you Grow 'em Big!

I would only grow 2 plants. 1097 and 1432. And maybe a 490 for a backup if you don't have more than one of those first 2 seeds. You could cross the 1097 with 1432 and 1432 with 1097. Either of those crosses are genetically bulletproof and would make a desireable seed. Then you can invest all of your time and resources into growing just those 2 plants big.

yah, and then you could see how the 1097.5 does as a selfed seed to begin with. not forgetting to self each plant in a shock absorber fruit, which should be culled off once the time comes to just get the seeds and allow the biggest fruit to prosper-----eric

i mean, see how the 1432 does (as a selfed 1097.5) to begin with.

so a self pollinated splitter crossed back to its parent is genetically bullet proof?

What about go for both, size and crosses. Take one plant say a 1005 and self it on the main and also cross it on a secondary with the 1097. Later, sever the secondary and hopefully you have a plant providing for the "big" one as well as the secondary to get your other desired cross to maturity.

i could not have said it better myself! i had intended to bring an idea like that to the table, concerning just this topic. so, while pruning off every other secondary, keep at least the one that has the cross-bearing fruit on it, still severed from the main plant.
