I'm fairly new to these giant pumkins - though very experienced as a gardener....

I've decided to untilize my family's interest in this project and turn it into a long-term research project. I've been researching through the internet on this subject fairly heavily and have already selected three commercially available strains with which to start the research.

Dills AG - world record weights. Prizewinner - pumkin shape/color regular weights over 300-400. Big Max - pumkin shape/color regular weights over 100-200.

Several self-pollination and cross-pollination experiments are already planned.

Have a question about 'strain names' - I've already figured out that the number is the weight of the pumpkin. I assume that the one word name behind it is the grower's last name? If so, anyone making a cross from that would then put their name behind the resulting pumkins?

Yes that would be the growers surname.

They would also put their name behind the resulting pumpkins and the seed parent and pollinator would be referenced like so:
For Example:
Pumpkin-----------Seed Parent-----------Pollinator--------
1000 Pugh 2003 - (1020.2 Kuhn 2001) x (1058 Houghton 2002)

All good questions scienceteacher...since it looks like you've been bitten by the Giant Pumpkin Bug you might as feel welcome. But warned just the same.

Warning: Giant Pumpkins are habit forming & this website & it's contents & thoughts of them are known to preoccupy & corrupt otherwise sane people.

Welcome!

Now what's your name?

Steve
