940 Mombert 00 (567 Mombert 02 X 801.5 Stelts 97)
My goal is to make a cross that will result in seeds that are great color producers, and hopefully result in nicely shaped pumpkins.
I'm planning a sibb cross of the 940 Mombert 00.
I was thinking of the following cross as well:
901 Hebb 02 X 940 Mombert 00
I would think crossing it with the 869.5 Calai would be awesome, but I don't have that seed(LOL).
I'm sure there are many options, feel free to share your thoughts.

I'd cross the 801.5 back into it but the 801.5 might be a little hard to get. The 869.5 is a good choice as well but you need to have it first...

So, why not move to the next level of big orange pumpkins and cross in the 846 Jutras?

How about a 627 Pappas (869 Calai x 867 Mombert)
or 621 Welty 02(947 Patrick x 846 Calai)
or 333 Little 03(414 Sharier x 350 Sadowski)
or 673 Kilbert (846 Calai x 940 Mombert 00)
or 410 Gadberry (810 Dill x Waterman 1 ton cross)
That 901 x 940 looks good to me also

The 951 Castellucci I grew in 2003 was a beautiful orange color, with big ribs, before it went down to an underside split...it also was 22% heavy to the chart.
I crossed the 901 Hebb with it, (901 x 951) and saw 2 very nice fruit grown off it with great color this past season.
Just a thought?

And oh yea, the (414 x 350) was a reverse x reverse cross or 2 great color seed...

Geez, this is a tough one because there are so many good choices. I think crossing the 940 Mombert 00 (one of my favorite seeds) with any of the following would be a good cross for color and hopefully shape as well......
486 Bhaskaran 01
603.5 Muller 03
931 Stucker 00
495 Reiss 04
997 Zunino 04
728.5 Gatewood 01
800 Diffenbaugher 04
915.5 Diffenbaugher 04
932 Steeves 03
529 Brinkley 04
I am thinking of doing the 940 with the 825.5 Shymanski this year. I also think the 965 Northrup 04 is interesting....... and also the 1036 and 1048.5 Companion. Sure wish I had about 3 acres to work with !

......... almost forgot my own seed !
the 364 Webster 04 (1016 Daleatas x 1036 Companion)
great for color and shape !

with as much orange as there is in that seed, i don't think the pollinator is going to dilute that very much in the next generation. i'd consider the 1432 Carlson, or a selfed 805 pukos that did well to the chart.

Maybe Andy is right but with the new GPC pay outs for 100% orange fruit, id keep it orange. To keep it perfect orange and to give it size id go 1125 Frantz (869 Calai X 1225 Jutras)but that is just me...LOL!

If it were me I'd cross it with the 670 Daigle. I think you would gain both ways on this one. 940 X 670 and 670 X 940. Could have some awsome size and color in the next generations.

Andy, yep...if we are bringing size in to the equation, the 1432 and an 805 selfed are near the top of my list. I think these dark orange ones need a thick walled boost.
I think that Mike's 1125 was one of the best looking pumpkins grown in 04........ and Eddy, your right.....the color doesn't get much better than the 670.
My number one choice for an unproven gamble this year is the 1210 Kline.......just got a hunch on this one.

I grew a 963 Stucker last year that was a beautifully colored and shaped pumpkin. The 963's cross is 935 Lloyd x 801.5 Stelts. The 963 has produced a 1252 pound pumpkin. I think it would be a good way to introduce some heavy/size potiential to any other orange seed.

Wow!
Great suggestions! I only have so much room to grow(LOL).
I'll really have to think it over. I was also thinking about the 855(aka.865) Black . That should increase wall thickness. Anyone know the color or anything else about the offspring of the 855 Black?

I think Vineman is on the right track. The 963 Stucker (801.5 x 935) gives us the orange color and the 935 is a bonus on the heavy end. I am familiar with Greg Stucker's 963 as I live in Napa and helped load this pumpkin. This is an excellent choice for orange color - shape - and heavy......yep, I think a 940 x 963 cross is heading in the right direction for that big orange cross.

hey, doug!
i wonder if MY emails are getting to you...
anyway, i could be growing the 940 '00,
but if i don't, and either weigh, if you have any fruit that you cull off of the plant, try to SELF one just for the heck of it. could be a storehouse of orange for generations to come, like the 801.5 selfed and the 869.5 selfed...a thought, perhaps. oh, that's right, you were gonna SIB it as well...that'd be cool! plus, the 940 '00 DID grow the 728.5 Gatewood, no small feat!, and ABSOLUTELY fantastic orange...and, the exact same weight as MY personal best from '01......eric

The (801.5 x sibb) Stucker seed...the weight eludes me at the moment....grows red, wheel-shaped fruit with the nicest dark orange/red color of anything I've ever seen.
Dave Garrell's 846 Calai remake was a beaut too.....

I'd cross it with the 879Rockwell98* and get some color back into it.

Southern,I think that's the 731 Stucker. I grew it a few years ago and you're right on about the brilliant color of that one.

The 931 Stucker listed in my above post should have read 731 Stucker. The 731 was one of the most red/orange pumpkins tha I have ever seen.

why not cross it back with the 567x801 genes like the 850 wallace which goes big and beautiful, or the 867 or 774 mombert which were both on the same plant (801x567). It would be a power house of orange. Jimmy

More great suggestions.
The talk about crossing into heavier orange, got me thinking about maybe crossing the 940 Mombert 00 into the 1074 Beuchemin 03. It could be a good cross for heavy and orange offspring.
Duster,
I was thinking about the 867 and 774, a couple of weeks ago, then changed my mind. Now I'm considering it again, thanks to you. The 850 Wallace is another one to consider. It may be hard to find though.
I just sent a money order to the SPGA, for a chance at the Stucker seeds. If I do win it, it would complicate things even more.
Time will tell.

hey you

Greencastle, PA

even better than the 963... I crossed a 1061.5 Ciliberto (723 x 935) with the 963. That's got a lot of 935... and the 1061 has also produced a 1213. The pumpkin I grew off the 1061 had nice orange color too, as did my 963 pumpkin.

Dont use the 731 unless you want something that will split.

For the 940, I would cross it with a dark squash like G said, and all the resulting offspring should be Bright orange in an F1 type situation

I grew three 731 plants last year. I had 6 pumpkins between them and no splits They were basically field grown and the largest was around 400lbs. All were dark orange/red I crossed my 961 Daletas with it.I am planting it this year. 666lb Janowiak = 961x731 Look for it in my soon to be famous Diary. lol

3/20/2005 7:57:25 AM

hey you

P.S. if you really want to keep the color you could just self it.

Duster mentioned the 774 Mombert (801.5 Stelts s 567.5 Mombert). I planted the 774 in 2001. It took first place for prettiest pumpkin at Borchard Weigh-Off. My 250 lb. late set pumpkin was smooth skin (of course) and VERY dark orange. (no hint of red). It was shaped exactly like its mother. I crossed the 774 with the 600 Glasier 00 uow (567.7 Mombert x 801.5 Stelts) and self. The offspring have been dark orange beauties.
I think this cross does a good job of cementing the "R" gene. Needs a lot of help on the weight end.

Brooks, I will e-mail you a 15 second video clip of the pumpkin that I grew on the 774 Mombert in 2001 and I will also send a 20 second video clip of the 731 Stucker 00. I have a photo of the pumpkin that I grew on the 1036 Companion last year. I will send that as well.
Get your sunglasses ready......all 3 of these pumpkins are blindingly orange....lol

Also check out the 867 Mombert 2000. Sister fruit and same cross as the 774.

Check out Brian Christiansen's diary from '02 (I think?)
Very nice bright orange wheel.

How about the 689.5 Sandercock (869.5 Calai x self). See this link to see a picture of one pumpkin grown from it.

geo, your right! them pumkins would be good to take with you during deer gun season so you could have the legal mount of orange with you,lol

That State Up North

Self, and cross with dark smooth green squash, not an 879, I would go with something like my 309 '04, many good options out there I am sure
F1 gives you all dark orange, backcross that population with 940 M '00 and F2 (BC1) population will be also all orange, and if you grow enough plants, and pay attention to what you are doing, you can keep it up and be all orange, and increase the % heavy for the line.
I guess it is a beauty contest now, but the champion is still the one with the most weight, so I like 1432 cross, but you gotta think 1027 Beachy makes a nice middle ground seed.

I like that cross. Hopefully the offspring will be great colored, nicely shaped, and heavy to the charts.
I'm going to email you a few questions.
