Question:
Does anyone know the 810 Dill did that was pollinator of the 932 Steeves? I'm wondering if by chance it was the same 810 that grew the Daigle 670?

According to the AGGC the 932 Steeves is a 1016 Daletas x 810 Dill 1999. This is a similar but reverse cross to the 670 Daigle - 810 Dill x 1230 Daletas. The 1016 and 1230 Daletas were both grown on the same 705 Stelts plant and were both crossed with the same 846 Calai (705 Stelts x 846 Calai) Genetically, I consider them identical.

The 932 is a nice cross. But if the pollinator was the plant that grew 670 Daigle, it goes from "a pretty good seed" to "the short list" real fast. I see that Irishtown, NB, where the Steeves fruit was grown, is very near Moncton, where Dennis lives. So it seems likely that was the source of the pollen, but was just hoping to confirm. If anybody knows how to contact either grower, could you let me know?

Probably the 810 Dill pollinator for the 932 Steeves was not the same plant that growth the 670 because there is a 778 Steeves (810 Dill X 1016 Daletas) 84 lbs heavy and described as very nice orange fruit, weighed at Windsor; probably the pollen was from this 810 plant.

FYI, I now have confirmation that is WAS Dennis' 810 that was used to pollinate the 932 Steeves. (Her 810 plant had no male flowers that day). So that might be good information for anyone considering planting 932 Steeves in light of how well 670 is doing...

Diana, does that mean that a 1016 x 1230 cross or reverse would be the same as a 1016 or 1230 x self

That's an interesting question. Since each individual seed in a pumpkin has some genetic differences from every other seed, sibbing or selfing a particular seed gives you different results. In sibbing, you are still crossing two similar but genetically different parents. Selfing would tend to make the genetic differences in the resulting seeds less.

Maybe a better way to say it is to consider the 1016 and 1230 seeds an identical cross - and similar, not identical, genetically. But I would still view a 1016 x 1230 cross the same as a 1016 or 1230 sibbed.

Grew the 932 Steeves last year. Some info in my diary. There were some other nice color crosses the Dills offered the same year. As best I can tell they have not been widely planted. 874 D. Dill 810 x 705 Stelts 856 H. Dill 846 Calai x 810 Dill 792 H. Dill 705 Stelts x 810 Dill to name a few. look out for the 1101 Northrup should be sweet. 670 Daigle x 810 Dill
