Is there an unspoken rule on which pumpkins should be crossed lets say i grow 2plants and sis does 2 and there all different seeds can we cross with eachother to get different results I know some peaple cross to better genetics but can we cross because we think it will make a good pumpkin and where do i learn about genetics and such as to which crosses produced the biggest pumpkins sorry for the question im just curious how everyone decides on crosses or breeding there pumpkin also if i do cross and my pumpkin gets big do i give it my own name but record which genetics it came from such as parents? thanks to all who respond and dont think im nutty lol

Take a look at the GPC results(which you can access from the home page of this website). The GPC results are listed from top to bottom for the world this year, and there is a column which states what seed each pumpkin was grown from (as well as what it was crossed with). This is a great place to start to get a handle on "what grows the big ones."

Another site with some good background info on genetics, although in a different format, is briansinsanity.com Hope you didn't think this was a walk in the park...LOL Lots to learn...keep askin questions...and people will help. That is the greatest part of this insanity is the incredible giving nature of the majority of the participants. Peace Wayne
ps I look thru diaries for 'kins I like, make note of parentage, then start searching for info. Takes time but...if addicted...it is fun time.

I was just curious because i would hate to make a cross that might be frowned upon me and sis are all about having fun where not in it for the elusive 1000pdr YET!!! lol but we want a nice carver next yr and something that when we do go to our weigh off it takes at least 3peaple or a forklift to get it out of the truck I know about certain crosses being the most desired but what of us experimenting and crossing things just becasue we want to see the end results? and thanks for the info im researching anything that grows a big pumpkin is good enough for us and yes im already planning next season gonna have a manure party with other growers looking to tap into my source should be fun

try the AGGC website, and go to the non-members menu.

There are several useful charts to download, try the "report card" for starters.

But if you are going for good looks alone, try what wayne says. That's what I do cause I'm a purist (I like orange)!
