I'd say the 1446 Eaton and the 1420 Larue did quite well.
The AGGC does rank seeds on number of progeny over 1000 lbs. It also lists a seed's top 5 and 10 progeny, based on weight.

I think one could do really well with any of these:
1253 Sperry, 1173.4 Macari, 848.6 Breznick, 500 Northrup and the 1354 Checkon did well too:-)

The 1005 Miller '04 grew three over 1000 lbs. (I figure if I post enough stuff about this seed that Gary will have to "find" them!)

How about the 1142 van Kooten '04. It grew Jake's 1287 winner as well as an 803 and a 607 on Vancouver Island.

Yes, Cliff was one of the lucky few I was able to send one to last Winter. Seeds were limited so not everyone got one.
Lucky Jim Ford got two (hit the lottery), let's hope he plants at least one....lol !!!!
Remember: 500 = 3rd generation Knauss
1314 = 4th generation Knauss (only one out there!)

Yes, last year about this time I was asking for self'ed or
inbred lines containing the 898. Jim B. was generous to
offer a few.

I actually "had" two. I planted one already, but in a horrible
storm in June, a few days after I had taken the hoophouse
down (it wouldn't have lasted anyway) the 500 plant had it's
main vine snapped right off, not to mention the rest of the
plant being wrenched beyond belief.

I usually plant about 6 plants with the intention that I'll
only have time to care for 4. Since I had other plants that
survived the storm much better, it was easy for me to just
let that one go... it produced several fruits that appeared
to be very dense. The color was mixed, but mostly a dull
reddish orange.

So, I have one more, and right now it's in my plans for
next year. Regards, Cliff

Mike,

How about a list of every 2004 seed that produced 1200 or
more? (I don't have AGGC.)

Edwards

Hudsonville, Michigan (michiganpumpkins@sbcglobal.net)

The good news is that, with so many seeds becoming proven producers, there are so many more good choices than there were even a few years ago, and thus less demand on one or two seeds. I bet most people on this site have something in their seed drawer from Mike's list above...

Amen to what Edwards said.
Just think of how many seeds, with great genetics, may not get planted. I wish I could devote more space and time to some of the unproven seeds, that should have great potential.

Does this say, that almost any decent seed can grow a big one if the weather, soil, and care is right? I would almost tend to believe that.

However, with my limited space I'm still going to grow something "proven"

Everyone keeps mentioning seeds that produced 1200 pounders this year. What about some sleeper seeds, produced well for a grower, and in the right hands is likely to become the next 1200 pound producer? I think the 775 Dill (and the 671 Dill, basically the same seed but I may have the only 5 out there) should be high on the sleeper list. You can't argue with a pumpkin just short of 1000 pounds and over 20% heavy, and it carries good colour.
