I see some pics show wagon wheel shaped pumpkins.Does this shape breed true?Is it sort after or disliked? Personally i prefer it,but have not been able to grow one.Thats why I thought it may be genetic and I had the wrong seeds.

theres no guarentee that a pumpkins offspring seed will produce exactly like it mother. in fact chances are there are several shapes and colors passed off in those seeds.it just depends on which seed from that genetic cess poll you ended up with.
years back you could count on a true repeat from most seed stocks ( the 567.5 kirk mombert comes to mind as a very true to form seed stock, most were orange tall at the shoulders and tapered down to the blossom end )and most if cared for properly would churn out 700 and over pumpkins everywhere.
of course this was before that genetic cess pool action took over that i spoke of.
i will use one of our more successfull reproducers as an example of what can be expected in a lot of the seeds available today,
the 1068 wallace 2003 ( 845 bobbier x 898 kanaus ) was a table top, bagel,( or bean bag chair if you prefer). not the prettiest thing i ever saw thats for sure.it was pink, salmon and white.
its seed has thrown every shape immaginable. tall and round, low, long and round, tractor wheels with some over the top measurements, big bagels over 200 in circ, bright orange, cream and salmon, salmon and white, salmon and orange.shades of grn sprinkled into the webbing, shoulders and stem.
dill rings may or may not show up also.
the seed is like a piece of candy from forest gumps box

I have had both shapes on the same plant. The 808 Beachy had both a wheel and a long fruit.

hey you

I think the shape of a pumpkin can also be determined by pollination. For example, an insufficiently pollinated lobe may result in a deformity in the coresponding wall of the fruit.
