Has anyone crossed the 582 Hester and the 1097.5 Beachy? This will be our second year growing and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this looks like a good cross and the reasons why. I've looked both up on the AGGC site and they both are great seeds. Do they compliment each other? What should I be looking for in the cross?

The AGGC lists one 582 X 1097 cross, the 604 Roulst 04.
and one 1097 X 582, the 1000 Pitura 05. This cross would make sense, however the colour may be a little light. Also both pumpkins have been know to throw some genetic defects like dill rings and blossom end splits.

Thanks for the help. We have the 582. We also have the 1229 Holland. Would that be better? How did you find out about the dill rings and blossom end splits? Is that on the AGGC site somewhere or do you just know that?

This year the 1097 did have some troubles, alot people grew it and you will notice that more because of this I think.Im still a 1097 Beachy fan though,Boy is it fun to grow,be ready to cut the stem 1/4 or 1/2 way through, cause when it starts growing there is no slowing it down. I think Stan Pugh can atest to this also.

Dave Pitura is a GVGO member. If you want to ask him for a seed or two from his 1000#, 1097 x 582 cross, email me and I can hook you up with him. I'm sure he would help out a fellow member of the club. Take care.

as with some other genetic traits, the dill rings and
short stems and whatever other problems that are characteristic of a particular seed can often be canceled out in the next generation, especially if the seed was crossed with anything but its self or sibling....Dill ring today, no Dill ring in next year's offspring. maybe.
i crossed the 1097 with the 582, and i hope my belief is correct when i plant it in '06.

I did a 582x898 Knauss cross this year which should be a pretty good cross. Let me know if you would like a seed from it. I won't be able to get on my e-mail until Dec. 10 because I'm out of town and don't have my e-mail set up on the laptop I'd using.
