Continuing to contemplate and dream about next year, here are some crosses that I have been thinking about. Please let me know your thoughts, which you like the best, is my thinking off on any of them, any other comments.

848 MacKenzie* x 895.5 Hester* Do you think this will make the results more consistent green?
1104.5 Hester x 1180 Daletas (same as the 1420) Trying to make a cross that should go heavy and big
1069.4 Liggett(846x1370) x 827 or 736 Garrell(846 remake) The 1069 progeny have both been very orange, trying to make a cross that should produce consistent orange.
500 Beauchemin(898 remake) x 550 Andrews(845 remake) Same gene pool as the 1068
1225 Jutras x 664 Liggett Big, heavy and some orange color
673 Kuhn (same cross as the 1068) x 528 Kuhn (same cross as the 845) On paper this looks great

thanks,
owen

Both of Bob MacKenzie's 1063 & 1003# squash were 848 x 895 crosses. Cross these two together and see what you get.

Can I order seeds now, or do I have to wait until you grow them?

I especially like the 1104.5 x 1180. Should be an agressive plant. Wouldn't the 1069.4 x 1225 Jutras give you some awesome size and orange color?

I will only comment on the squash..lol....the 848 did very well with color and size...no need for more color based on that. Grow it big enough ) and it won't matter what you cross it with !!

The 500 Beauchemin is not a 898 remake. The 503 Beauchemin is a 898 remake.

Owen, hows the 1081 Leonzi 05 sound ,its a remake of the 1068 as well. I heard Ray had to cut the stem completly off the main vine for it to stop growing. And this didnt help it, the 1081 still grew with the main vine cut completly off for a couple days after that.,,,,,,,Ok the growing when it wasnt connecting to the vine isnt quite true, but it sounds good though! Im thinking this is going to be a great Seed to grow Owen.

Brad, 1069 x 1225 might be good for size and some color, but I am hoping that the 846 remake genes will solidify the orange color in any progeny, the goal here is consistent orange.

Glenn, good point, if it is big enough won't really matter, I might just go ahead and self it.

Brooks, I agree, there is something special about the 845 x 898 crosses. You have to go back 5 generations of the 898 to find a common seed to the 845 heirarchy, perhaps a sign of hybrid vigor? It does give hope to those that have the remake, not all remakes do as well, maybe this time. The 748* is a killer seed, I just might have to ask if I can get one, thanks for the idea.

Phil, I would love to get my hands on the crosses that Bob made, unfortunately I do not have any contact information for him. If you can help me out there, I would appreciate it, if so email me, thanks!

I like these genetic "hope" discussions... it is good (and
fun) to plan.

I'm planning to cross 500 Beauchemin X 1032 Dieff, and the
reverse. The 500 Beauchemin is mostly inbred 898, and the
1032 Dieff is inbred 1097. Now, if I can actually grow these
BIG, then maybe people would want them!

Owen, or whoever knows about this, how much do the great grandparents influence the pumpkins?

I would like to make this cross someday:

1142 Van Kooten 04 x 1095 Wallace 05

The 1142 = 1066 Vezzolo 02 (845 Bobier x 845 Bobier)
x 1367.5 Rose 03 (723 Bobier x 845 Bobier)
The 1095 = 1367.5 Rose 03 (723 Bobier x 845 Bobier)
x 1367.5 Rose 03 (723 Bobier x 845 Bobier)

That would be 5x 845 Bobier and 3x 723 Bobier.

How similar would that be to the original 845 x 723 cross?

My seeds we would be the fourth generation.
1st = 845 etc
2nd = 1367.5 etc
3rd = 1095 etc
4th = ??? Wursten

Brad...the fruit would fit the 1097 model absolutely perfectly ! I guarantee it ! After all....if you get anything from white to yellow to orange to red-orange or even one ruled a squash...and anywhere from 20% heavy to 20% light its a match to a 1097 offspring....a very variable seed I'd say.

I can't complain about that. That could be an interesting
cross. But another way to look at it... these seeds are
already inbred. You could also take either of these and cross
them with something completely different. Bring in an 898
line or a pure orange line, etc. Just a thought.

I like that 1032 of Chritys also,I cant wait to see what it produces. I just like the 1097 Beachy Period! It produced a great color orange on Christys pumpkin and mine as well. When I crossed my 1097 Beachy with the 1260 Weir All I could think of is maybe one day this seed producing a monster size pumpkin with concrete type walls that would hold up no matter how fast or big the 1097 genes would take it. I didnt expect the 1097 to produce a heck of a nice orange color though, thats a bonus for me. If your seed has the 723 init the sky is the limit I think.

i do alot of planning what seeds to grow -but i will end up crossing aggressive x aggressive plants-and if the ones i wanted happen to be that-then thats great-but if any plant isnt up to par-any of them are subject to getting pulled out

Thanks all. I do have some nice orange seeds, Cliff, to cross with, a 1101 Northrup x self, a 1125 Frantz x self and a 670 Daigle x self. I also have a 1370 Rose x self I would like to cross with the 1095 (1367.5 x self).
I haven't heard of anyone crossing the 1370 with the 1367.5 so don't know what it would produce.
