Anyone grow a seed that was from an 898 x self? If so, what were the results of the offspring. Weight, % heavy, etc... I'm going to grow a 942 Garrell which was 898 x self and was thinking of selfing it a second time. Any thoughts on this? Mark

Mark,
The 753 Pappas '03 (898 Knauss x self) has 3 reported:
726 McCullen '05 (9.09% over) 616.5 Kaczenski '05 (2.47% under) 560 Staring '05 (5.29% under)
The 606 Kurkowski '03 has no reported progeny.
The only other 898 x self seeds were all from fruit grown this year.
The 3 reported fruit don't speak well for the theory unless you average them in which case it might support the idea. I would grow the 842 & self it for sure. If the progeny do run heavy or exhibit other desirable traits then they'll be worth selfing again.
The 942 might have only been 3% heavy but that fruit epitomized what a giant pumpkin should be. The shoulders, ribbing & stem were sweet.

Steve , I am thinking along those lines. I was thinking about selfing the 942 myself this year. I was just trying to see if anyone else had selfed the 898 twice and what results had come of it. I'm not very good with the genetics 101 of AG's. What would be the goal of selfing a seed multiple numbers of times? Mark

Not exactly a self, but the 500 Beauchemin is inbred 898 for several generations, and threw a 1314 for Jim himself.

Mark, the general goal of selfing a plant would be to create a more predictable/uniform set of traits in the offspring of the fruit. Hopefully, the fruit you're selfing has desirable traits. I'm sure not all 898 offspring are champions. I don't know what the 942 looks like, but if I were to self it, I would want that fruit to go heavy and to be orange. -Jim

Hello all, Third year grower. Cliff, Can you clarify the difference between selfing and inbred. Thanks Kirk

This is a little tough since I don't have AGGC, but the 500 Beauchemin was (1074 Beauchemin X 898 Knauss).
I think!
And the 1074 Beauchemin was 898 X something else, I think...
The point being, that I think the 500 is 3/4 898, or something like that. No actual selfing going on, but definitely "inbred".
Inbred then might be... pollinate a line with it's own mother, or father, or something like that. Typically, it's own mother... hope that makes sense.

Another example, Christy grew a 1000 pounder this year on the 1097 Beachy. And, she pollinated it with the 1432 Peterson/Carlsen which itself was grown on the 1097. I don't remember what the 1432 was pollinated with... (if anyone knows, please drop me a line). So, this is another line without any selfing, but it is *mostly* 1097. Perhaps Christy's seeds will be as good as the 1097? Maybe... who knows?
Christy, sorry for causing a run on your seeds. -Cliff

Oh wow... in a way that's a little disappointing, in that TOO much selfing is not always good. Oh well, it still ought to be interesting.
