I've wondered that about a lot of seeds.
Too many good crosses, not enough growers?
Are we concentrating too much on proven seeds?
I think it's kind of an adventure planting seeds with no known progeny.

I have a check mark next to that one on my seed list. That means it will get some consideration. Too many seeds, not enough time or space. If I did nothing but try to prove my own seeds I wouldn't have enough time or space. I like to try to prove out my own seeds, and I like to grow proven seeds, and I like to grow some that I just like the cross. I need to be retired with acreage and neither one is in the cards any time soon. I think most people are in the same boat.

Thats it if no one else is going to step up to the plate..You force me to plant it myself :) But when it becomes the most sought after seed in the pumpkin growing community...lol

How about the 1049 Holland? 705 Stelts x 903 Holland... it's the only 705 that I know of that weighed heavy.

my policy of
"pollinate big and ugly with orange and lovely"
sometimes limits me because the order of the
cross comes into play. i don't like to say "DUH", eric,
but "DUH", eric! lol.....so 845 X 705 would appeal to me more quickly, although i think the general consensus would be that it does not matter that much if at all which is pollinated by which, just a phrase. if anyone else is swayed by the cross-order then they too should consider whether or not it matters. i think a lot of people think of crossing plants like it is mixing paint or a stiff drink,
myself included, and it is not always that simple---we never really know what the outcome will be in AGs.
a seed is like the result of millions of switches that have been turned on or off by their interaction with the switches of another entity, the other plant's genetics.
i am sure there must be some relation between genetic study and the science of digital logic gates, which i did really poorly in in a short time at college...
i should grow my 728.5 '01 (845 X 1140) and my 300 '01 (1140 X 845) side by side and cross them back and forth and do the same thing that some other growers have done to come out in the end with a new super seed....i should look more closely at this seed, 955,
but i doubt that i will actually plant it in '06...so many i have to choose from>>>>>

I did plant the 1049 Holland. Decent plant, but not awesome.
Every fruit on it (even some little ones that I let grow) had
a weird shape. Huge in the shoulders, but tapered off rapidly
until the blossom end which was almost pointed. Kind of a
"triangle" shape. Very nice color!

At the time I was not well versed in the finer points of
pruning, etc. lol

I think Tiller summed it up very well. And, someday when I'm
retired, I'm going to do something like 20 plants....

I think retirement is only about 25 years away!!! Woohoo!!!

Actually, I design digital logic gates for a living. Unfortunately, there is NO relation to genetic study!! ;-)

An interesting thought though... would you rather try "pretty X big" or "big X pretty". I'm not sure what has actually been confirmed in this area. I've heard that 80% of color comes from the father (pollinator)... but I'm really not sure I believe that.

I think the other way around Cliff, color from the mother, most of the time. There are, of course, exceptions like the 1370 Rose. So I guess that just means it can be done both ways. Maybe we should just refer to Forrest Gumps mother on this one.
