Hi. Looking to continue the discussion here instead of at the bottom of MN Pumpkin Grower's thread. PA Punkin' Pharmer: I'm looking to use the 1068 for competition first, genetics second, and am already at just 400 sf. for the plant so the secondary fruits idea won't really work. AleX Noel.

It could work. If you wanted to pollinate one on a secondary late in the season, then cut the secondary from the main. The roots at the leaf nodes shoud be plenty to keep it growing for seeds/genetics.

go for the glory - one fruit on main vine, in the best position. give it all you got. if the plant is worthy, keep a clone going until the next year to play with the genetics then.

at that point, we'll have a few offspring from the 1068 offspring, so you may want to attempt a remake cross of one of the better 1068 crosses.

Yeah, like Andy says, go for it. You've got the seed that just had the best year ever, and it may be on its way to becoming the greatest producing seed ever. Grow it as big as you can!

Alex, You know you want to be in that winners circle at Topsfield next year? 500Beauchemin, better yet the

I certainly will be going for the glory as always, weight will always be above color and cross for me. Right now I like that remake idea with a clone, and as a cross for this year the 983 Pukos (1068 Wallace x 1420 LaRue (1104.5 Hester X 1180 Daletas)) was a good suggestion by Edwards. I'm actually thinking that I might bring in a far back ancestor, the 804 Zehr 94', just because I have a few and it could be really interesting. AleX Noel.

Any of the following seeds could be a good pollinator for the 1068 Wallace:
898 Knauss(pretty scarce I'm guessing)
1370 Rose(had a fine yr.)
500 Beauchemin
Also Steve Delatas grew some nice crosses this yr.; some are 3/4 898 Knauss.

Alex compare the 1068 to the 1225.4 Jutras and cee what you think.

if you can go over 1,000 pound with the 1068 (at frerichs farm) you will not need to worry about saving a clone.
ron and i will give you another seed as your reward for a job well done.thats my challange to you.

i dont think a lot of people know you are still in high school and, have been trying very hard to compete in our club for several years now. we are very proud of you.

aside from being our youngest grower, you also are always willing to work for the club

I'm gonna print that one out and have you and Ron sign it Pap. LOL! Thanks. Doug Kabat e-mailed today with a good idea: 545 Handy 99' (663 Eaton X 730 Stellpflug). The 545 was about 20 percent heavy itself, and throws really heavy fruit. I'm wondering about more info on those parents. AleX Noel.

Im sure you know already that pap is a man of his word Alex, if your soil is right,(which i hope mine is next year) you got a heck of a chance to hit 1000 with that seed. Good luck with it!

I would say that the 1016 Deltas would make a good cross. May be if you have a 1180 Delats you could try the revers cross of the 1253 speary. There is definatly a lot of seeds to choose from.

Why not cross it with your own 720.6?

AleX,
Solve the problem between RI and Topsfield, grow two big ones in 06.

I've thought about the 720.6 alot, I could do both, and in the culling process choose the best fruit no matter the cross. The 545 looks like a great pollinator though, very little in common with the 1068. I'll have to grow atleast two champs Bill! AleX Noel.
