Are there some pumpkins that are more apt to produce dill rings and pass them to their progeny? If so which ones?

I think that the 582 hester seems to throw dill rings, but in this day and age, it seems like any seed you grow has the possibility of a dill ring.

The 1068 throws pumpkims with them sometimes, especially when they're bigger. AleX Noel.

Wouldn't Howard Dill be a little insulted that a defect in a certain line would bear his name? After all, so many of these seeds have been crossed and inbred by other people that it should hardly carry his name. Weird.

well we've been down this road before ... ya it would be nice to change it ... but it seems like that's the way it is.
another way to look at it ... is that only large fruit have Dill rings... and we wouldn't have any with large fruit without Howard ... so if one stretches it ... it's a compliment. sorry that's the best I can do.

take it from me dill rings, sag lines, or whatever we refer to them as are nothing but trouble.
theres not a whole lot you can do with them except to hope for the best.
unfortunately the sag line is really an internal crack ( or v shape split ) on the inner wall of the fruit. the sag line runs in the opposite direction to the rib line and that is where they will blow out.

ive seen lots of sag lines and to be truthfull, many have made it with no problem.

as mentioned above any very large pumpkin seed produced over the last few years has the capability to throw a sag line however, if you get a good seed stock from say 2002 and back the risk is greatly reduced.

Is this caused by a thin wall and the fruit basically is collapsing upon itself or is it 100% genetic?

The wall is thin at the crack so it caves in. The thicker the wall initially, the bigger the crack would need to be to go through. Alot is genetic, it can be helped though with calcium towels daily. AleX Noel.
