I was wondering what everybody's take is on the best orange producers. For discussion sake, let's leave out the older, harder to get seeds like 846,801.5,810 etc.

Everyone who knows me knows I like the 603 Muller 03. Since Martin's 1233, the 670 Daigle is becoming unreachable for people like me, but there's always the 1101 Northrup which hasn't hit 1000+ yet. And after 2006 I think the 1125 Frantz is going to go off the charts.

I like the 1027 Beachy 04.
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=28585
It has a great genetic background from a true backcross that is not typical for giving orange if I remember right (845 Bobier x 723 Bobier and reverse).
Should be a good start for big and orange, choosing the right cross partner. IMHO.

I think the 1370 Rose is at the top of my list.Next will be the 1101 Northrup and the 670 Daigle. I hope the 810 dill remake that Eddy Z made will perform as well as the original. I will give it a try in my patch this year. Also the 1029.5 Kurilich looks good to me. It produced Joe's 802 last year and it was a beauty.

oops I forgot the 500 Northrup also. It produced the 1247 Tingley last year. Nice color also.

Beachyseeds.com has the 808 Beachy(846 Calai X 801.5 Stelts) and the Beachy Cross 2003 #10(801.5 stelts X sib) for sale. I may be giving at least one of these seeds to a local grower, to see to how they do.
Howard Dill's website has a number of nice color crosses still available. I wish I could devote more space to try some of these.
I agree with the 603 Muller, it seems to be a consistant producer of nice color/shape. I wish I would have obtained a couple before they became somewhat scarce.

Side note, I was looking at the progeny of the 846 Calai. All those nice orange pumpkins it grew- 118 on record- how pissed do you think Nic Welty must have been when the 846 Calai throws him a 947lb Squash? Weird.

I grew an 1101 Northrup last year. It went 18% heavy. It weighed 791 lbs...and should have weighed 650 lbs. Great color and plant. I buried the main vine and it rotted in mid September or it would have been bigger.

My 869.5 in 03 was a wellow - light orange, Don's 953 02 though was about the darkest, smoothest, HIGHEST pumpkin I've ever seen. The 481 Hester I grew in 04 because all my others fried gave me my brilliant orange 516 on a Jul. 20 or so open pol. with a neglected plant. Somebody needs to try that 481, I think I may be the only person who ever has. AleX Noel.

My favorite is the 901 Hebb for color and shape. The 1370 now unobtainable for most has some really nice color and size, then the 1101 Northrup is beautiful and heavy. The 1225 Jutras is another one. I plan on growing the 1225 and the 1101 this year

I grew an 808 Beachy that was about the best orange I have seen. I have one more left for this year. I also grew a 727 Duchezeau that was a nice orange. Too bad the first one split and the second one that set in August on a secondary only made 398 by weighoff.

I did a 1016 Daletas x 1036 Companion cross (364 Webster = 1016 x 1036).
I planted the 364 (small plant) last year as a color test. It threw beeautiful dark orange smooth skin pumpkins.

Does anyone know anything about the 840 Hester 02 EXB? Why hasn't anyone grown this yet- it was the best looking 846 Calai offspring in the batch, size and shape, seriously. And I think it went heavy. I emailed Brett about it but won't know if he replied until work on Monday. Maybe there were no seeds or something.

But don't start a run on it until I get my seeds LOL.

1370 Rose, 846 Jutras, and 603 Mueller. I have seen all of them throw VERY nice orange fruits. But what about the offspring of these fruits?? I grew the 800 Dieffenbaugher last season (845 Nesbitt x 846 Jutras). Talk about ORANGE. t threw the most beautiful red/orange mottled fruit I think I have ever seen. The 1238 H Brunst 05 (1370 x self) Another beautiful orange fruit and HEAVY too. Could be a good one to plant this year for orange and heavy. Espicially for those of us whom the 1370 is almost out of reach!! Then the 603 Mueller, it grew the 1027 Dawson....VERY orange and pretty and heavy too, but NO seeds inside :( BUT, Jerry was nice enough to sen out a Reverse cross of the 1027....The 1051 Dawson (1008.5 Razo x 603 Mueller) The orange genes are still there and possibly some heavy ones too. So what is my point in all this rambling?? My point is I think with all the hard work of some really great growers over the years, we are getting ever closer to something that is both Orange AND heavy!!

805?!?
Ya gotta be kiddin' me, man.

Although of all the 723 offspring, I have to admit 960 Rose and 767 Catapano look good. But that's only 2 out of hundreds...

Many great orange seeds out there, but the most consistent in it's progeny is the 869.5 Calai (as the female). I've been growing the Sandercock 689.5 (869.5 Calai x self) as have many other orange growers. No recessive genes showing up yet. Very dark orange, perfectly round (except the bottom of course), and nicely ribbed. No canteloping and no blotching of color. Howard has some 869.5 Calai pollinated with the 810 Dill this past season. Not very big ones, though, for most growers. Would like to cross the Sandercock 689.5 with some Reiss 1233.5.

Years ago I was researching seeds for big orange crosses. The two most compelling genetics at the time were the 567.5 Mombert 92 and the 920 Cole 98. The 920 Cole was a 567.5 Mombert offspring.

Since I couldn't get ahold of either of these seeds, I looked for the top orange offspring of these seeds. That's how I discovered the 801.5 Stelts which has 567.5 Mombert on both sides and the 810 Dill which was the biggest 920 Cole offspring and also has the 567.5 Mombert on both sides.

I couldn't get ahold of the 801.5 Stelts so I went for the two top orange offspring of the 801.5 Stelts at the time, the 846 Calai and the 947.2 Patrick. The Patrick was a 801.5 selfed. My cross that year with the 947.2 Patrick, the 789 Zunino, throws some of the brightest orange, smooth skin pumpkins I have ever seen. See:

http://home.pacbell.net/diana_do/saga12.htm

Several years later I planted the 1230 Daletas, and the 1048 Companion and crossed the two. The 1230 has 801.5 Stelts on both sides and the 1048 Companion is 810 Dill crossed back into the 801.5 and is one of the largest offspring of the 810 Dill.

The offspring of the 1230 plant was the 981 Zunino. This is the one I plan to grow this year and cross it with the 1233 Reiss. The 1233 Reiss is a similar cross to my 981 with 1230, 810 and 801.5 in it's background. I'm hoping for some big orange fireworks here....

Most of the the really orange crosses mentioned above have the 567.5 Mombert or the 920 Cole prominent in their genetic backgrounds.

In addition to the ones already mentioned...

in 2004 I grew the 963 Stucker and 782.5 Stucker.
the 963 gave me a big, round, 4% heavy, state record, medium orange fruit.
the 782.5 gave me a very nice looking dark orange fruit.

you can see them in my 04 diary.
I know Greg Stucker grew some other nice orange crosses too.

Yeah, 731 Stucker has definately produced some nice orange fruit but has yet to go big.

I'm also growing a selfed 603 offspring this year so we'll see about the offspring. The 650 Muller was an even better looking fruit from the 603, pollinated with 1458 Whittier. But I've heard those seeds don't do so great for size or color either.

I really like the color of the 374 I had grown 3 years ago, its was from a 940 wentzell x open(More then likely self but cant say 100% where the bees was before they hit the 940 female), so im not real sure if it would even produce another orange color pumpkin from the 374's seeds.
Other 940,s I have seen grown like the 750 Wentzell 04 ended up a light yellowish orange that does not even come close to to the 374's color I grew from the 940.
I had the 374 planted last year to see if it would produce the same color orange but ended up pulling it to make room for my other plants. I wish now i would have grown it out just to see.

The 374 was and still is the brightest color, (Neon orange I call it), I have ever seen in person. It sure was a beautiful pumpkin.

Interesting to note, based on what Vince said, how almost all
of our true orange color comes from one seed, that one 609
Laemelle. (spelling?) One seed, can matter a whole lot...

In past years it seemed there were a lot of BIG options, OR
color options, but we're slowly progressing (or are we?) to
a time of BIG and TRUE ORANGE options. I guess when the most
desired seed in the world based on weight also happens to
throw fruit that looks like the 1233 Reiss, then we will have
arrived! ;-)

I grew a 1061 Ciliberto in 2004 and got a very dark orange pumpkin from it. I crossed it with a 963 Stucker and also did the reverse cross. The 1061 is 723 Bobier x 935 Lloyd and the 963 is 801 Stelts x 935 Lloyd. I think the 1233 and 1008 Reiss will probably be the seeds that Cliff is talking about... I guess I should try to find some. lol

609 Laemmle...
makes you wonder what was in Helmut's patch in the 80's. Hiss stuff was all open pollinated. Maybe some Big Max, Prizewinner or other red-orange genes got mixed in there...

I agree Calai 1074 produced some excellent orange for me this year it was my first year and I grew 3 pumpkins(2)on secondaries on the same plant with results of 481,297,& 164 they were sure pretty, check out my 2005 diary.

I do think it's a good possibility that other maxima such as
Prizewinner mixed in with whatever Helmut was doing. It's
probably either that, or else Helmut was actively choosing
color as well as size.

Hmmm... makes you wonder if it could be done again???

I wonder what you get when you cross say, 1068 Wallace x Prizewinner. No one's ever had the stones to something like that. But if someone would like to donate a 1068 to me, I'll give it a shot :>D

I'm not sure of the 1074 Calai seeing as it is 1/2 876.5 Lloyd. What was the theory there?
