I was wondering if there is any good heavy weight seeds out there that grow big beautiful fruit and don't have any 846 in them? Also what would be a good color seed to cross with the 1068. It seems to me that seeds with the 845 or 723 in them that are crossed with color producing seeds without the 846 in them tend to not through big pumpkins. Why is this. So what would be a good color producing seed to cross with the 1068?

how about the 1048.6 companion 2003 (810 dill x 801.5 stelts) produced some good looking progeny all heavy to the chart. the 997 zunino is the biggest listed. great color on it also.

or the 1233 Reiss, great shape and color and one of the largest orange pumpkins ever

The 603.5 Muller has thrown great color consistantly. May be a good pollintor for color.

Not to get of the Subject but what the 1233 Reiss produces has not been proven.

The 603.5 Muller is 845 Nesbitt x self.
845 Nesbitt is 723 x 846

1233 and/or 670 don't fly either, they have 1230 Delatas in them which is 1/2 846 Calai.

But the 801.5 Stelts on the other side does the trick

The 1233 may not be proven yet, but I'll bet you that it gets proven in a big way this year. I believe that one of the biggest factors in proving a seed is getting it grown widely...then its genetics will take it from there.

Color is such a tricky thing. I will have a few plants this year but am not looking to have a competition patch, so I will be trying out some old seeds and some of my own old seeds that haven't been tried. I crossed the 835 McIntyre with the 723 Bobier and I think I'm going to see what that one can do. The 835 made beautiful bright orange pumpkins with great shape so maybe it will be passed on. Sometimes Orange + orange = White. The 717 Mitchell (723 Bobier X 801 Stelts) produced white pumpkins for me a couple years ago and the 1033 Emmons (846 Calai X Self)did it last year in my patch. It wasn't what I was expecting, but as my daughter says, you get what you get and you don't throw a fit. I'm also gonna play around with my own sideways version of line breeding. Last year I pollinated the 1074 Calai (846 remake) with the 1033 Emmons, (846 selfed) I'm thinking of planting that one and crossing it with another 846 remake, either a Garrell or Stucker. The family tree will end up looking like a hillbilly family reunion. I don't know if there are any advantages or disadvantages to doing this. But I never had an 846 to grow so I will take what I do have and distill the 846 from all of these progeny and siblings so to speak. I don't know of anyone else doing this and if nothing else it amuses me.

personally, we will probably cross a couple of our 1068 this year with something we know is proven orange to help the color back into the line.
Having said that it looks like we have three pollinators for sure. In no certain order 1016 steve d, 1370 jerry r, and one of steve davies brilliant orange weigh to chart seed stocks ( probably the 851 )
im also crossing a 1068 with the 887 lorraine orr from 1995. Not for color but for size improvement by bring in something outside the 1068 genetic line. 887 was a great seed for ron and i in 1996 and its time to give her a second shot.

How about 783 Daletas 00 (500 Hebb 96 x 801.5 Stelts 97)No 846 Calai.
Progeny go heavy and orange. Grew the 1385 Daletas,1090 Fisher,1064 Sherwood

I guess i should say any color seeds because most pretty pumpkins contain the 846..........Is there any more good color seeds out of the 801.5 or its progengy.

Orangeneck,
Thanks for correcting me. I forgot Alex was looking for no 846 Calai in the background. I do think the 603.5 Muller might add quite a bit of color into the 1068 Wallace.

I should say more color into the progeny of the cross(not the 1068 pumpkin of course).

Correct me if I am wrong but the 846 Calai gets it color from the 801.5 Stelts. We would have to look further back then the 846.

Doug I agree that the 603.5 has got probably the best orange potential out there but I was just trying to play by the rules. What about the 810 Dill?

Good point Shannon.
Is there any other color line out there, that isn't an 801.5 offspring, or an offspring of the 801.5's ancestors?
