Hi all. This is a basic question, and I may know the answer already, but it's interesting. How many original giants went into todays surviving lines? I know that many growers added in unknown and even non AG stuff throughout the years. I am NOT looking to generate something on where the AG came from, but which old time Dill's and stuff like that generated how much of the modern stuff? How far back do you need to go to find that the 898 and 846 came from the same fruit? I kind of think it's probably just not known, but how many possibilities are there? Thanks, AleX Noel.

milford, CT,

Alex, I did some research on the 695 Handy this year, and was able to trace it back into the early 80's without going too crazy. With a little searching either on aggc, brians insanity etc. you'd be surprised how far you can go back. What I was trying to do was find out common ancestral genetics for the pumpkins I'm going to grow. Mark

The 575 Dill 88, 827 Holland 92, 567.5 Mombert 92 would have to be 3 landmark pumpkins.

Mark, that's interesting. Were you able to make connections to other modern pumpkins? Ron R, you're right, much of what we grow today came from those. I was talking more in the very early (70's-83 or so) range. I'm mostly gathering knowledge for a post I may make tonight if anyone is curious. Maybe easier: how many pumpkins of 250+ lb. were grown then? Thanks, AleX Noel.

This is the best thread I found on this subject.

hey you

If you want to know about that 70's-80's stuff, you should talk to Nic Welty. There is a seed that is at least partially non-Dill descendent that you can find in some popular genetics. It is the 674.5 Waterman; it grew the 722 Holland and pollinated the 827 Holland. It also grew the 573 McCahill (674.5 x self), whcih grew the 724 Willemse (573 x self). The 724 grew the 900.8 Lyons. The 724 also grew the 706.5 Willemse (724 x self), which grew the 962 Willemse). The 962 has 3 progeny listed on Brian's site, the largest of which was 834.8 pounds. Apparently, there's a fairly large portion of A.G. genetics that has nothing to do with Howard Dill.
