Do the size of seeds have anything to do with the size or agressiveness in the plant it produces? I made a cross a few years ago of a 950Boyton that was a super agressive plant. The seeds from that pumpkin are huge. About double the size of a normal ag seed. I gave a few to Turken who is growing them and he stated that they germed very quickly and are far ahead of the 10 or so other seeds he planted.

nope- no correlation between them.

Agree...size of seed makes no differnce unless within the same pumpkin & then only to a degree.

hmmmmm. agressive goooood....mind my asking what the cross was? i'll prob'ly plant the 950.4 again next year
alongside my 575 (950.4 X 767 Catapano)....eric

Nice I was wondering if that seed was from you Jeff. It seems to me that bigger seed= more initial fuel for the seedling. I'm looking forward to seeing how it keeps up- rock and roll Turken!

amongst seeds in a group of the same, then yes, plant the biggest one. but, amongst DiFfErEnT seeds or in choosing which CROSS to plant, don't let seed size play a part---
one year i planted some seeds in peat pots and a few were
for relatives and a neighbor or two...one was a 629 Holland '00, the smallest seed of about 6 crosses. it is a really small, white seed...it grew the biggest seedling of all of them, and there was very little difference in the sprouting times, +/- a day....
sadly, they were all non-real-AG-growers!

The cross was most likely a self or a 650Boyton. That was the ony two I grew that year.I have a disease in my patch that wiped out all vines over the last three years. That year 2004 the 950 was growing like crazy and even though I pruned the plant daily I could not tame it until my vines rotted. The pumpkin was a late pollination on a side vine that I managed to save from rot. I had great beginning growth to the pumpkins and then the main vine fruit rotted at around day 18.When I opened the fruit up I was surpised to see how huge the seeds were. I gave over 100 to a school in Maryland to plant last year but I never heard back from them. With the problems I had in my patch I decided to move and build a bigger house/patch. Next year I look forward to growing again.

looks of seedlings go hand in hand with does size matter ?

we have had beautiful seedlings do well and some that dont. likewise we have had one eared , torn eared, seedlings that do reat well.

as lomg as the first true leaf grows you usually are in good shape. the juice is inside the plant and in your soil.

When I first got the 200 lawerce seeds I honestly didnt think they would ever germinate. I thought they were just to huge and were just some sort of mutant dud seed. As far as pumpkins seeds or seedlings go I have never seen anything like the 200 lawerce seedlings at this stage. What has impressed me the most is the Radicle/root growth. Supposivly the 845 bobier has aggressive deep root growth, that helps it in the heat. Deep roots extra water etc. Thus part of the heat results from the Boyton 950.4 It could also be that the 200 lawerce loves the germination heat of 84 degrees more than my other seedlings maybe? Or as Orangeneck says bigger seed more initial fuel for the seedling. My other boyton 950.4 crosses don't come close to the growth of the 200 lawerce. But as a group they have germinated faster then the rest of my seedlings. I guessing some of my Boyton 950.4 crosses didnt take on their cross genes more than the Boyton 950.4 gene. I'm going to germinate a true Boyton 950.4 seed, a 1036 perez and the 598 Ceresna which is a second generation 845 bobier selfed. Maybe I can figure something out from that. I don't know what future the 200 lawerce will have as far as a plant or fruit, but as far as a seed/seedling it is a true freak of nature. It has been fun to watch it grow so far. Jeff you didnt have any radioactive waste in your soil? I Don't want to end up with a plant like in Little Shop of Horrors. lol

I just deshelled the 950.4 Boyton , 1036 Perez, 620 Boyton 598 Ceresna and 301 Boyton. The 950.4 Boyton, 1036 Perez and 301 were all tan seeds in similiar size. The 620 Boyton was a white seed. 620 Boyton (762 Neuville 00 x 845 bobier 00) I have a hunch the 200 lawerce is a 950.4 crossed with the 620 boyton. I'm just guessing the 762 Neuville genes which are sort of out in left field in the Pumpkin gene pool has something to do with the 200 Lawerce. I have already germinated the 124 Gerry (Boyton 950.4 selfed) the 575 Gerry (950.4 Boyton x 767 Catapawo) The 861 Fredricks (950 Boyton x 731 Stucker) the 440 George (950.4 x 736 Garrell the 281 George ( 804 Carlson x 950.4 Boyton)

All of these seeds have been tan, none of these seeds were huge and none of their growth has been anywhere near the 200 Lawerce. So my hypothis is, lol... my guess is that the 200 Lawerce is a Boyton 950.4 x 620 Boyton cross and the Boyton 950.4 genetics and 762 Neuville genetics have created this monster!

Turken, I just hope it gives you a nice pumpkin. I think it is very kind of you to plant this very unproven seed in the first place. I have told you that I'm not growing this year because of building a house but I will have a ton of fun watching you guys do it. Best of luck. Jeff
