I am thinking of crossing the 848* Mackenzie with a 218* Andrews. They have very different parentage.

I was planning to grow a 663* Andrews in a new patch but now that I have (or will have soon) these seeds, I might have to sacrifice an orange one from the main patch and go big with the green this year!

What are their parents? If they are indeed very different, then this could create something that was talked about alot a couple years ago: hybrid vigor. I'm not sure there's any real examples of it though. You're atleast starting with good seeds. AleX Noel.

Alex, that's right I am looking for some Vigor hopefully.

The 848 MacKenzie is 895.5* Hester x 756.8* Kennedy

The 218 Andrews is 738* Stellpflug x 879* Rockwell

They do not seem to share a SINGLE ancestor back thru 4 generations

Thanks, -Jim

No Brooks, Sorry.
Orangeneck: Well then, if all the H.V. stuff is true. You have a good shot at it. Darn though, I don't know the past of 3 of those 4! Gotta brush up on my squash genetics. I'd say, If you were to find a seed with NO 900.8 Lyons* in it (which the 218 might be?), you could create H.V. with any other squash seed out there! Not to seem doubtful (I'm trying a hybrid vigor cross myself this year), but I should say "create a situation which fits the hybrid vigor theory". Is there really a way to prove hybrid vigor is in a plant? I seem to remember from a thread long ago, that it was said that if it was really attained, you would KNOW. The plant would grow at least twice as fast, and twice as thick and strong and everything else. Almost like a magical thing. At least that's the sense I remember getting when I read it. AleX Noel.

AHHH I don't want to burst anyones bubble but....Joe himself says that the Hybrid Vigor Theory was just that...a theory...he has since changed his mind.

Yeah Alex the 218* has no 900 Lyons* in it whatsoever. I think that is why this seed gained it's initial popularity. It has gone to 859 lbs to date.

It would seem everything is in the right place then. I don't know though, I'm possibly reconsidering my attempt at it now. I'll stick with my plans though, it's still a good cross. AleX Noel.
